There’s no way around it. If you want to be confident as you age you need enough muscle mass to protect your physical freedom.

Consider this, how excited would you be about getting older if all you saw on the horizon is an assisted living facility because you didn’t have the strength to safely take care of your daily needs? Not something most people look forward to, but it’s exactly where we’re heading when we don’t prioritize muscle mass.

Muscle mass is your golden ticket to maximum freedom as you age. It keeps you out and about instead of limited and left out. It means you’re able to say YES to golden opportunities to build memories in your golden years.

Build muscle. Do it now. Your future self will thank you.

They’re equally bad because they’re equally dangerous. “No pain no gain,” may seem more dangerous on the surface but that’s only true in the short-term.

In the long-run “If it hurts at all, STOP” is just as dangerous. Why?Simple. Adaptation requires irritation... now in English. If you want previously injured/painful body parts to get out of pain, that won’t happen without discomfort.

So, if you avoid 100% of the things that cause discomfort, you’ll also avoid 100% of the things necessary to pave the road to pain-free living. On the flip side, if you fall too deep into the “no pain, no gain” mentality, you’ll blow right past the limiters and alarm bells your body has in place to keep you safe.

If you want to feel and perform your best for as long as possible, you NEED a better understanding of pain and the language your body speaks to keep you safe. If that’s not something you’re interested in learning on your own, find a coach who gets it and can teach you. Need a coach? Shoot me a DM.

The way muscle mass makes you look, love it or hate it, is inconsequential compared to what it does for your health and longevity.

Muscle mass preserves your freedom. Without it, you don’t get to CHOOSE how you live. This isn’t a conversation about being strong enough to impose your will on others; it’s about the fact that so many people stop doing things they love far too early in life because their bodies can’t handle it.

Muscle mass is also a powerful shield against cognitive decline. Working muscle releases compounds (myokines) that protect the nervous system. The more muscle you have, the more protection you get. When you don’t have enough, your brain becomes more vulnerable.

Muscle mass isn’t a pursuit of vanity; it’s a responsibility.

“I tried going to the gym before and working out on my own, but there’s just nothing pushing you or keeping you going. But these people at CrossFit are insanely supportive and it feels so good hearing them cheering me on and seeing my changes.” - Will Tyler on the power of the CrossFit Owasso community.

“I NEVER LOSE. I EITHER WIN OR I LEARN. WHEN I FAIL AN OBSTACLE, I GET UP AND TRY AGAIN, AND GET SMARTER, STRONGER AND FASTER. I WILL NEVER STOP TRYING."

Wow…just saw this quote from a 12 year old kid on the spartan race website. 🤯🏆🏅

SELF-CARE AND YOUR RESPONSIBILITY

As we dive into the New Year, one thing that gets thrown around a lot is this idea of “self-care.”

For a long time, “self-care” is something I wouldn’t have paid too much attention to because, honestly, the term seems a bit soft. We talk a lot about being protectors and providers at TRAIN HARD. We are here to serve those around us. So, how does that fit in with us taking care of ourselves?

Isn’t being a protector and provider rooted in the idea of being selfless? Shouldn’t I be taking care of others before taking care of myself?

BUT HERE IS THE THING — SELF-CARE IS NOT ABOUT BEING SELFISH; IT’S ABOUT BEING THE STRONGEST, MOST RESILIENT VERSION OF YOURSELF SO YOU CAN SHOW UP FOR EVERYONE AROUND YOU.

Let me be clear: I can't be the parent I want to be if I don't prioritize my health. I can't show up as the spouse I aspire to be if I don’t take care of myself.

As a leader, protector, or provider, I will always fall short if I don’t take the time to TRAIN HARD, regardless of what life throws my way.

This year, I challenge you to make self-care your utmost priority. It might seem selfish to some, but it’s the most selfless act you can commit to. When you're at your best physically and mentally, you bring more to every role you play—whether as a parent, a partner, or a professional.

When you decide to get married, you are committing to show up as the best partner for your spouse. You can’t do that if you don’t care for yourself first.

The same goes when you have kids or take on a leadership role at work. You chose to have people rely on you. How you show up after making that commitment is up to you.

In 2024, I want TRAIN HARD to redefine self-care. Let's transform it from a buzzword into a lifestyle. A lifestyle where taking care of yourself isn’t a luxury but a necessity. A lifestyle where TRAIN HARD isn't just a slogan but a testament to how we live every single day.

Let’s make 2024 the year we show up for ourselves so we can show up better for those we love.

TRAIN HARD.

TRAINING, for me, isn't about spending hours in the gym anymore. It is about being efficient and always having my workouts enhance the rest of my day.

Don't overcomplicate it. Set forth a plan and execute.
