Two of Archer County’s finest cowboys—and, without a doubt, two of its sweetest and most loving souls.
There is so much to tell, so much that has already been told, and so very much that will continue to be told about these two boys. But this post is about the cowboys they were becoming—and the profound loss their passing brings to the future of our county’s Western heritage, a heritage we all work so diligently to preserve.
Ya see... they weren’t just cowboys. They were set to do great things, and they were destined to help carry that cowboy legacy forward. A legacy that even at their tender young ages, they both had grown to appreciate and love.

KENLAN MONROE “SCOOTER” COLEMAN
Kenlan... His parents are Justin and Kelly, who have been involved with the Archer County Rodeo for many years. Justin serves as a board member and is a past officer, while Kelly has been instrumental in the Queen Contest over the last few years. Together, they raised their kids to be involved in and a large part of our annual rodeo celebration.
Kenlan was his daddy’s right-hand man, Scooter, and his mama’s perfect baby, Boo. He rode through the parades and grand entries right behind his dad, and he never missed a rodeo. He spent his days horseback, working cattle for his daddy and for ranches all over Texas. He was the hardest worker and was always willing to do anything for anyone.
He LOVED BIG! He was the happiest cowboy, and he loved life. Kenlan was a bright light in this world, and if you knew him, you loved him!
For the past three years, Friday night at the rodeo has been “Pink Out for Kaybree”—our night—in memory of Kenlan’s sweet older sister, Kaybree, who went to be with Jesus just three years ago and, no doubt, welcomed her baby brother with open arms.
Kenlan will be so missed by his two older brothers, Keaton and Kelvin, who also grew up as part of our Archer County Rodeo family.

WAYNE PAUL WEST
Wayne Paul... belongs to Lauren and Zane. Lauren once organized our rodeo queen pageant and has a deep love for the Western way of life. Zane, a cowboy, grew up as part of the Archer County Rodeo from a young age, his parents being longtime supporters and rodeo fans, a tradition that he continues with his own family.
Wayne Paul loved to rope. He roped the dummy tirelessly, preparing for his chance in the arena. He loved horses. He loved his dogs, Willis and Lou. He loved working with his colts and spending time with his dad, getting them ready. And he loved Jesus!
He was especially excited about working at his family’s Three Circle Ranch in Foard County. He looked forward to spending more days there and becoming part of something that meant so much to him and his family.
His dreams were too big for this world. He planned to attend Texas Tech University, rodeo for the Texas Tech Rodeo Team, become an engineer, and one day have a family of his own. But God needed him for something much bigger. On August 15, Wayne Paul got the horse of his dreams—the horse he had always wanted to ride and rope from.
Wayne Paul lived his life at full speed. He had so many plans ahead of him. He was only given 13 years, but he filled those years with an incredible amount of life. In addition to being an Archer City Jr High student, he was a son, a grandson, a nephew, a friend, an athlete, and, through and through, a cowboy. He was also an incredibly protective and proud big brother to Monroe.

These boys were more than bright lights in our world... they were our future. They were the ones who would have carried our legacy forward, and they will be missed beyond words.
