Some years back High Point had the annual Crop Walk, at the time a 10 mile walk for hunger awareness. Each participant would get donation pledges for the miles and the money would then go to help feed the hungry.

On one of these my best friend Yvette and I walked the route together. But this time was different.

Yvette had recently learned of women around the world who had to walk 10 or more miles daily to get food rations to feed their families.

Yvette, the strongest and truest Christian I’ve ever met, in an effort to understand their situation, went on a three day fast before the 10 mile walk. She wanted to experience and internalize compassion and solidarity with the world’s poorest inhabitants.

I’m remembering her today, (she passed on in 2018) in our times of turmoil where we see so much apathetic, insensate, and callous behavior amongst those who claim the faith without revealing the Spirit of Christ.

May God help and forgive us and keep raising Yvettes to encourage us forward.
