Are you constantly focusing more on what went wrong rather than what went right?
This is partially due to habits learned throughout our lives and partially because our brains are hard wired to focus on the negative.
So what happens when we begin to adjust that way of thinking?
Our brains can slowly begin to appreciate the small victories we have everyday…
Yoga Medicine® instructor and the award-winning author of Finding OM, Rashmi Bismark, MD, MPH, invites us to begin this journey by practicing daily gratitude. Rather than being disappointed in yourself for missing the last day of a weekly challenge, congratulate yourself for hitting 6 days in a row! Our brains automatically go to “well I didn’t finish it, or meet the goal, so it’s been a failure” when in all reality, you put in 6 days of consistent effort, showing up for yourself everyday that you could, and that’s a WIN in our book!
“Reflecting upon gratitude helps reduce the impacts of stress on our bodies, enhances our mood, invites optimism, and enriches our relationships. When we practice daily gratitude, it literally rewires our brains, making it easier to develop new habits and patterns that are in alignment with how you want to be living your life. When you stay stuck on the negativity bias, you are stuck on autopilot; gratitude can be the path to more conscious living.”
How can you practice daily gratitude?
• Celebrate your successes
• Look for the blessing in the hardship
• Be grateful for the people in your life supporting you on your wellness journey
• Take it one day, one breath at a time
• Connect with nature
When we are more consciously aware of our victories, no matter how small or big, we can begin to focus more and more on the positives that are happening all around us, allowing that positivity to seep into all of the aspects of our lives.
You are the best advocate for your health and wellness, which all begins internally, so be kind to yourself, appreciate your victories and the wonders around you, the world might just become a little brighter ✨
