🐴 The research is straightforward: children with ADHD who participate in equine-assisted activities show measurable improvements in attention, impulse control, and self-regulation — often within weeks of starting. The less obvious question is why.

Part of the answer is the horse itself. Horses are immediate and honest. They respond to what you're doing right now, not what you did five minutes ago. A child who can't sit still at a desk discovers that a horse requires exactly the kind of focused, present-moment attention that medication or therapy is trying to build. The horse becomes a reason to regulate, because the horse makes it clear — gently, without judgment — when the child isn't.

Part of the answer is the body. Riding engages core muscles and balance systems in ways that activate neurological pathways involved in attention. The rhythmic movement of a horse at walk has been shown to affect brain activity in measurable ways.

And part of the answer, honestly, is that it's interesting. A horse is more interesting than a worksheet. A twelve-year-old who is impossible to engage in a classroom will stay focused on a horse for an hour without being asked twice.

Have you seen a horse help a child who was struggling to connect elsewhere?

Nobody talks about how Kristie Peterson paid $400 for the horse that ended the greatest dynasty in barrel racing history. Let that sink in.
Charmayne James and Scamper had just won ten consecutive World Championships. Ten straight years. The most dominant run in the history of women's professional sports. Nobody in the barrel racing world could figure out how to stop it. Nobody could get close enough to make it a real competition. Charmayne was simply in a category all her own.
Then a Colorado cowgirl nobody was talking about drove home with a horse nobody wanted for four hundred dollars — and changed everything.
Bozo was a broncy former race horse and reining competitor that his previous owners had basically given up on. He had been traded for three months of training on another horse before landing in Kristie Peterson's hands. The price she paid could have bought a decent saddle. Maybe two. It could not have bought anyone's attention or respect.
Then she started running him. Then she started winning.
In 1993 the barrel racing world got its first real look at what was coming — Kristie and Bozo placed in nine of ten rounds at the NFR and nearly stopped the dynasty right there. A tipped barrel in round nine was the only thing standing between them and history.

In 1994 the barrel dropped and the dynasty ended. Kristie Peterson and a four hundred dollar horse won the World Championship.
Four total World Championships followed — 1994 1996 1997 and 1998. Five consecutive NFR average titles. Eighty NFR runs with only two barrels tipped. Bozo named AQHA Horse of the Year five straight times. Over one million dollars in career earnings on a horse she paid less for than most people spend on groceries in a month.
Then her daughter Jordon Briggs grew up watching all of it — and in 2021 went on to win a World Championship of her own. The first mother and daughter duo in WPRA history to both win World Championships. A legacy that started with a broncy four hundred dollar gelding nobody else wanted.
Nobody talks about that kind of story nearly enough.
That was Kristie Peterson and Bozo. 🐴🎀🏆
