Course Spotlight of the week takeover by the MuniciPals:
Trophy Lake Golf & Casting Club is located in Port Orchard, WA which is a little over an hour from downtown Seattle. It bills itself a resort course which can usually either be a good thing when done well (think Bandon Dunes) or a bad thing when done poorly (think cookie cutter holes with a ton of fake water features). Trophy Lake does it well and should be a centerpiece of your next Seattle golf adventure. We're going to focus on the golf course, but as you can tell from the name, they also offer 2 on-course ponds which are stocked with rainbow trout if you want to do some fishing after you tee it up.

Trophy Lake stands out because it does almost everything right. The fairways are firm & fast which allows players to use their imagination rather than simply flying the ball to the hole every time. Almost every hole is on its own, so that when you roll up to the tee, all you see is the hole in front of you carved through the forest. & while there are trees everywhere and places you absolutely cannot hit it, the trees are usually way out of play and really help frame each hole. And I probably should have led with this, but there are a lot of great golf holes from short par 4s to brawny, challenging par 3s. Our group had a hard time picking our favorite hole and had to scrape the bottom of the barrel to find a hole we had issues with.⁣

This is going to sound blasphemous, but I think that Trophy Lake is like Bandon Trails second cousin. Ironically, Bandon Trails is my favorite course I've played in 2023, & Trophy Lake is the course that has exceeded expectations more than any course I've played this year - I was seriously blown away. The only bummer is that you really have to take a cart, but when you're on a golf trip, cart golf is usually best anyway to save your stamina. At ~ $100 (with the cart fee included) for a primetime weekend tee time, Trophy Lake feels like quite the deal. I know that Chambers Bay is the jewel of the Seattle area, but you can't get a tee time unless you're planning months in advance. The fact that you can get a tee time at Trophy Lake the week of at this price point is a steal.

Applewood Golf Course in Golden, Colorado has been a beloved community landmark since 1961. Designed by renowned golf course architect J. Press Maxwell, Applewood is known for its challenging yet fair layout, stunning natural beauty, and abundance of wildlife.
Nestled against the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Applewood's 18 holes offer golfers a variety of scenic views, from towering pines and cascading waterfalls to snow-capped peaks and golden sunsets. The course is also home to a variety of birdlife, including hawks, owls, and even the occasional bald eagle.
Super fair price for a spectacular round of golf. All the courses in the area seemed to just have aerated but the course was still in tremendous shape overall.

Kiwanis International we are glad we had a chance to sponsor your event this year. Hopefully this is the start of a long partnership!

"Thank you for the donation of golf balls. The golf outing was rained out, but we had the banquet and raffle for the golfers. We handed out the golf balls to the golfers, and the golfers I talk to that tried the Union Green balls liked them a lot. I attached some pictures from the banquet. Next year the event will be August 12th 2024, and any donations are greatly appreciated."

Thanks Again

Muni spotlight of the week comes from our friends over at The MuniciPals Pod🎙️📸
‘Elk Ridge Golf Course sits about an hour and fifteen minutes outside of Portland in Carson, WA and is an ideal stopping point if you're heading to Hood River for vacation. Elk Ridge was previously known as Carson Hot Springs Golf Course before being foreclosed on for ~ 5 years; however, in 2011, it was rebranded to Elk RIdge Golf Course and given some proper TLC.
The setting is absolutely ideal as the course plays along the Columbia River Gorge, and the backdrop to your round is a beautiful combination of mountains and trees. Frequent players say that the best time to sneak out is around the end of the day when the sun is playing off all sides of the gorge. It's an amazing place to spend 4 hours.
Elk Ridge calls itself a links-style course which, despite being one of the most overused phrases in golf, isn't untrue. Many of the greens have openings in the front so players can run the ball up. And the grass allows the ball to trundle along rather than getting caught up as happens at many courses (listen to one of our recent pods about Spanish Bay). The stars of the show at Elk Ridge are the greens which are expansive and undulating. There are mellow spots on each green which can make a hole very gettable. There are also pinnable areas at the top of ridges that require precision and accuracy. This makes Elk Ridge infinitely playable and will keep players captivated every round.
The bunkers are also in excellent shape. Coming from the Bay Area, where most bunkers are like rocks, the consistent sand is a real pleasure to play from. Finally, the course is largely forgiving off the tee which allows players of all skill levels to have a great time. Elk Ridge also has a wonderful bar and grill and a friendly staff which will do a great job taking care of you.
At $60 to walk on the weekends, I think Elk RIdge is one of the best deals going. And again, Portland locals often cite Elk RIdge as one of their favorite places to play and have no complaints about making the ~ hour long drive to spend 4 hours in such a beautiful setting.’
