Course Spotlight of the week takeover by the MuniciPals:
Trophy Lake Golf & Casting Club is located in Port Orchard, WA which is a little over an hour from downtown Seattle. It bills itself a resort course which can usually either be a good thing when done well (think Bandon Dunes) or a bad thing when done poorly (think cookie cutter holes with a ton of fake water features). Trophy Lake does it well and should be a centerpiece of your next Seattle golf adventure. We're going to focus on the golf course, but as you can tell from the name, they also offer 2 on-course ponds which are stocked with rainbow trout if you want to do some fishing after you tee it up.
Trophy Lake stands out because it does almost everything right. The fairways are firm & fast which allows players to use their imagination rather than simply flying the ball to the hole every time. Almost every hole is on its own, so that when you roll up to the tee, all you see is the hole in front of you carved through the forest. & while there are trees everywhere and places you absolutely cannot hit it, the trees are usually way out of play and really help frame each hole. And I probably should have led with this, but there are a lot of great golf holes from short par 4s to brawny, challenging par 3s. Our group had a hard time picking our favorite hole and had to scrape the bottom of the barrel to find a hole we had issues with.
This is going to sound blasphemous, but I think that Trophy Lake is like Bandon Trails second cousin. Ironically, Bandon Trails is my favorite course I've played in 2023, & Trophy Lake is the course that has exceeded expectations more than any course I've played this year - I was seriously blown away. The only bummer is that you really have to take a cart, but when you're on a golf trip, cart golf is usually best anyway to save your stamina. At ~ $100 (with the cart fee included) for a primetime weekend tee time, Trophy Lake feels like quite the deal. I know that Chambers Bay is the jewel of the Seattle area, but you can't get a tee time unless you're planning months in advance. The fact that you can get a tee time at Trophy Lake the week of at this price point is a steal.
