THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!
While they will still volunteer at times for Xavier High School, because they both bleed Xavier Blue, Kathy and Mike Bates have retired from their long-time roles. "We now will be able to watch the sunset, and have dinner before Xavier games. It’s time to say goodbye to our home away from home," said Kathy.
The AD for the past 29 years, Kathy “officially” retired Aug. 13 in 2021, ending a teaching, coaching and administrative career that started 45 years ago at the high school in Appleton, WI. Her husband, Mike, has also retired from his role after nearly 50 years, mostly as a volunteer for Xavier Athletics; he coached for 28 years at the high school, as well as donated countless hours over many years promoting Xavier Athletics on social media.
“We will truly miss the day-to-day interaction with the student-athletes, coaches, administrators, staff, Xavier families, the Xavier Booster Club as well as game officials, conference commissioners, other ADs across the state, media, and the WIAA personnel,” said Kathy. “It has been a pleasure to work with so many great people for so many years.
“It’s been a special ride at a special place. Now is the time for the next generation to step up, and move into a great opportunity at a great school,” Kathy offered. “It’s time for Luke Herriges, the new Xavier athletic director, to take the reins. He is someone with the passion, energy, leadership and the commitment to continue the successes of the athletic program, and he will embrace our coaches, athletes, and the Xavier family.
“We wish for continued and improved success for the students, families, staff, colleagues and the entire Xavier community. Without a doubt, Xavier is a very unique place. We have so many great memories, and Xavier will always remain in our hearts,” added Kathy. Both are 1971 grads of XHS.
