We’re not just teaching students. We’re creating training partners.
A couple stripes earned and a new purple belt on the mats tonight, but what means the most to me is the history behind them.
Jim,Phillip and Anthony have been part of what we’ve been building since nearly the beginning of our first academy. We’ve spent a lot of years on the mats together—learning, struggling, improving, and helping each other get better.
That’s one of the things I love most about jiu jitsu. Somewhere along the way, the people you teach become the people you train with. Training partners become teammates. And sometimes, if you’re lucky, teammates become lifelong friends.
Proud of what these guys have earned, but even more proud to call them my teammates and, more importantly, my friends.
We get better together.

There's no single type of person who belongs on a jiu jitsu mat.
Look around one of our classes and you'll see it.
Different ages. Different body types. Different experience levels. Different reasons for training.
But once we're on the mat, we're all doing the same thing—learning, working through problems, and helping the people around us improve.
You don't have to fit some image of what a jiu jitsu student is supposed to look like.
This is what our mat looks like.
We get better together.

This week at Cove: Back Escapes.
This week we're spending time working from one of the toughest places in jiu jitsu—when someone has your back.
But we're not just giving students a list of escapes to memorize.
We want them to understand the position.
What's actually controlling you?
What problems have to be solved first?
What makes an escape possible—and what makes it fail?
Once you understand the problem, the techniques start making a lot more sense.
Then comes the important part: working with a training partner and figuring it out together.
That's what we're working on this week.
We get better together.

Last night we celebrated promotions at Cove.

Every new belt and every stripe represents something that was earned—time on the mats, lessons learned, difficult days, small improvements, and a lot of work that most people never see.

But nobody gets there alone.

Behind every person in these photos are training partners who helped them improve, coaches who invested in them, and families who made it possible for them to keep showing up.

For our kids especially, there are parents and siblings rearranging schedules, driving them to practice, sitting through classes, encouraging them on hard days, and giving them the opportunity to grow.

So while the belts and stripes belong to the students who earned them, last night was also a celebration of the community that helped them get there.

Thank you to every student, coach, parent, sibling, and family member who continues to invest in what we're building at Cove.

We get better together.

Think you need to get in shape before trying jiu-jitsu?
Most people do.
The truth is, that's exactly what class is for.
No one expects you to walk through our doors already fit, coordinated, or experienced. We expect you to show up, learn, and improve one class at a time.
Look at this group. Different ages. Different body types. Different backgrounds. One thing in common—they all decided to start.
If you've been waiting until you're "ready," this is your reminder that you already are.
Come train with us.

Jiu-jitsu has never made my life easier. But it has made me better at dealing with hard things.

You don't always get to choose the position you're put in.
Sometimes you're tired. Sometimes you're uncomfortable. Sometimes you're behind. Sometimes you're dealing with a problem you didn't create.
Jiu-jitsu has taught me that panicking rarely improves the position.
Instead, you slow down.
Understand where you are.
Figure out what you can control.
Then start working.
I've found that lesson applies to a lot more than jiu-jitsu.
Life is going to put all of us in difficult positions.
We don't always get to choose them.
But we can choose how we respond.
We get better together.
