In Memory of George Shinners

The Antigo Area Youth Hockey Association mourns the loss of George Shinners, who passed away on August 15, 2026 at the age of 87.

George's commitment to Antigo's kids ran deep. In 1987, he was inducted into the AAYHA Hall of Fame for Community Engagement — recognition of years spent showing up for our program, our families, and our rink. His name sits among the very first honorees in our Hall of Fame's history, a reminder of how long his support went back.

His fingerprints are on our program in ways families see every season. George was instrumental in building our indoor facility, giving generations of Antigo kids a place to learn and grow the game. And just this year, his generosity made it possible for AAYHA to purchase new bleachers for the 2026-2027 season — a gift that families will be sitting on for years to come, cheering on their players because of him.

Beyond hockey, George served this community in nearly every way a person can: on the Langlade County Board, the Antigo School District, the Antigo Area Recreation Foundation, the Chamber of Commerce, and more. He built things — literally, through Antigo Construction — and he built community, quietly and consistently, for decades.

We are grateful for everything he gave to our players, our families, and our program. His legacy lives on in every kid who steps on our ice.
