What is strolling? And why you need to know...

Strolling is a technique developed in the US bass world. Deep diving crankbaits are “strolled” far behind the boat to obtain maximum depth for largemouth suspended on deep underwater ledges. The trolling motor is used to move the boat forward. In a nut shell, strolling is trolling under electric power not with an outboard.

There are situations in musky fishing where strolling can be a very effective technique. Try it when fishing a shallow w**d flat or w**d edge. While a trolling motor does make noise, it’s a stealthier approach than traditional trolling with your main motor or a kicker. Strolling is also a great way to thoroughly work an area on a very windy day. With the wind at your back serving as the power source make directional changes with your electric to run your bait close to cover or along a contour.

Strolling a bait can also be a welcome break from casting. Chucking and retrieving big baits is fatiguing for many musky anglers - especially over the course of an entire day.

Many musky baits can be strolled. Some of the best are pull-pause baits like a Suick Thriller. Glides work well too, as do blades and shallow running crank baits. For heart pounding strikes you can even stroll top waters!

Simply cast your bait 40-50 feet directly behind the boat, stand on the back deck and work the bait the same way you would on a casting retrieve. Back off on your drag setting though – strolling strikes can be crushing.

This year, let your electric do the work and stroll up a giant!
