šŸ‘€ IT’S TIME!!! šŸ”„šŸ“š The September Book Giveaway has officially begun!

A TON of quality books are going out on the east side of the building, and they’re FREE. If you really feel the need to give something back, we gladly accept donations—but there is absolutely no obligation.

I simply don’t have enough room in the building, and I’d much rather see these books find good homes than sit in boxes. šŸ˜…

Today I’m putting out a ton of nonfiction, cookbooks, and textbooks. Looks like we’re getting a break from the rain, so have at it!

šŸ“š More books will be coming out throughout the month, depending on the weather and how quickly things move.

And yes—the books in front of the building are FREE all month as well!

Winter is coming. šŸ§ā„ļø

Come grab some books! ā¤ļøšŸ“š

We will -Not- be carrying MTG or PokĆ©mon cards. Why? Because I’ve spent quite a bit of time researching the possibility, especially with the upcoming closure of Galactic Gaming and the vacuum that will leave downtown. I genuinely wanted to see if we could help fill that gap, but the more I looked at it, the more I realized that it simply isn’t viable with our current setup.

A true gaming store needs more than just shelves of cards. It needs space to build a community—gaming tables, events, tournaments, tabletop nights, themed D&D rooms, devoted staff, and a place where people actually want to spend an afternoon.

And honestly, I’m shocked at the margins on MTG and PokĆ©mon. To be even somewhat competitive with online pricing, you’re often looking at roughly 10–20% margins on some of the most sought-after products. D&D merchandise is a little better, but the model still requires significant volume and additional revenue streams to make the numbers work.

That’s a labor of passion and love, and I have enormous respect for the people who make it work.

The problem is that doing it right would mean an entirely different setup for us—probably an entire building dedicated to gaming. There are several buildings downtown that could be incredible for something like this: large gaming rooms, tabletop spaces, card tournaments, themed D&D rooms, youth events, and a real community hub.

But that kind of project would require an investment of several hundred thousand dollars, and that simply isn’t a risk I can take right now.

I also know myself well enough to admit that I have a tendency to spread myself too thin. šŸ˜‚ Our current niche—books, manga, snacks, gifts, and the weird little things that make The Blessed Fig Tree what it is—is solid. I don’t want to jeopardize that by trying to become something we aren’t equipped to be.

That said, the vacuum is real. Seeing Galactic Gaming close is genuinely depressing for downtown. I grew up in gaming stores, and they have a special place in my heart. They’re not just retail stores—they can be incredibly important social outlets, especially for young people.

If someone has the funding, building, or ability to put together a very favorable loan arrangement—particularly someone who sees it as an investment in the future of downtown—I honestly think there is an opportunity here.

There are buildings downtown that could be absolutely fantastic for this.

I’ve been kicking this idea around for a while, and I wanted to finally put it out there. I’m just not convinced it’s a wise risk for my current setup.

So, for now: no MTG or PokƩmon at the Fig Tree.

But if gaming is your dream, Antigo has a pretty interesting hole waiting to be filled.

Cheers. šŸ»

šŸ¾ A quick business update: We’ve crossed a meaningful milestone: **$100,000 in gross sales** so far this year. That’s roughly four times what we did last year, with gross revenue up over 320%. Every dollar is going right back into the store—trying new products, restocking the books you love most, and expanding the space downstairs and in the back room.

I’m keeping things honest: after costs, we’re netting around 30–40%, but right now my own take-home is mostly just covering food and utilities. The bigger dream is another building one day, but that’s still a year or two away at this pace. We have a solid plan and a loyal customer base, and I’m committed to not spreading ourselves too thin.

That’s why we’re focusing on the folks who’ve become the heart of this place: young families, grandparents bringing their grandchildren, and the hardworking factory and working-class folks who keep showing up. You all have been our backbone this year, and we’re so grateful.

I’m pouring everything I have into the holiday season ahead. Downtown can absolutely support successful businesses when we tailor what we do to our growing community. There’s no curse here—just a lot of good people and steady work.

Thank you for every visit, every purchase, and every kind word. We’re in this together. Cheers to what’s ahead. šŸ»

(Also attached the remaining loan to repay inventory and invoices that have 2-3 months left for full transparency. That’s where 50-60% of this goes to replace inventory/utilities etc. before I can reinvest.)
