Why don’t we just use the temperature on our phones? 🌡

The simple answer: it’s not as safe.

We follow the same science-based UIL heat guidelines that Texas high schools are now required to use. WBGT measures the actual heat stress on the body (temperature + humidity + sun + wind). Ambient temperature alone does not.

There are days when the air temperature is only in the mid-80s but the WBGT is in the high 80s or even 90s because of humidity and direct sun. On those days the risk is higher than a regular thermometer suggests.

Conversely, there are also days when the air temperature looks high but the WBGT is lower due to lower humidity or cloud cover. Using only ambient temperature can lead to both over-restricting and under-protecting practices.

We check readings throughout the day and during workouts. At AYTFC we use two independent sources and always go with the higher number when deciding equipment, practice length, or whether to modify/cancel.

The AYTFC and the WTRYFL have been following the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) protocols for several years now.

We monitor the WBGT throughout the day and during practices. At AYTFC, we use two sources and go with the higher number when determining what equipment to wear, practice lengths, or cancellations.
