Introducing the six class winners for the 2025 Annapolis-to-Newport Race

William Gunther is a veteran offshore sailor, but had never done the Annapolis to Newport Race. The Essex, Connecticut resident decided to check that iconic event off the bucket list and did so in serious style.

Gunther skippered Blue Skies to a convincing victory in ORC Performance Cruiser 1 class for the 40th biennial Annapolis to Newport Race. John Brooks served as the other watch captain aboard the Alden Skye 50-footer, which posted a corrected time of 4 days, 5 hours, 54 minutes and 59 seconds.

That was more than four hours better than class runner-up Legacy, a Beneteau First 40 skippered by Nick Carter of Lewes, Delaware.

“We’re absolutely thrilled with the result. To win our class in our first time doing this great race is very exciting,” said Gunther, who was encouraged to enter Annapolis to Newport by legendary sailmaker Butch Ulmer. “I was talking to Butch and he suggested it would be a good race for this boat and boy was he right.”

Skipper Arthur Santry leads the Judel/Vrolijk 66-footer to impressive performance

Arthur Santry competed in the Annapolis to Newport Race many times aboard his father’s boat named Temptation. The Arlington, Virginia resident has done the iconic distance race several times aboard his own series of boats also named Temptation.

Santry and Temptation had never been an Annapolis to Newport winner until now. Santry skippered Temptation/Oakcliff to an impressive performance in the 40th biennial

Annapolis to Newport Race. Not only did the Judel/Vrolijk 66-footer capture line honors as first
to finish, but is likely to earn the overall victory on corrected time as well.

Two more entries have crossed the line as the first to finish in their class: 2nd to finish today, Alibi a J/120 owned by John Sartorious in PHRF and in the ORC Doublehanded class sailing his J/124 Sundog, Paul Parks 3rd over the line. It is foggy and rainy in Newport but we doubt that is dampening their spirits!

First to Finish Temptation Oakcliff! Art Santry's JV66 crossed the finish line off of Castle Hill Light at 00:55:40 this morning, June 10. Congratulations to the crew that includes a large number of U30 team members. Annapolis YC can boast that Rear Commodore Gary Jobson and Past Commodore Mark Myers are also part of the team!

The 40th biennial Annapolis-to-Newport Race got underway Friday with 37 boats in four classes starting in south-southeasterly winds ranging from 5 to 7 knots. The Annapolis Yacht Club Race Committee, led by AYC Co-Race Chair and Event PRO Bruce Bingman, got off four clean starts to send the Friday fleet down the bay.
