Tomorrow’s date night. Cannot wait (unfortunately it won’t be going to an ECF game to watch the Pistons 😔)

As our relationship grows and gets better my quality of life gets better

Stress is less

Allows me to be better in my career

Making sure our weekly meetings happen is a priority so we can cover what we need to do, what’s coming up for us and our family, and show appreciation to one another

I started this post without actually any direction other than to say I’m excited for date night but overall I’m just very appreciative of my wife and hope this shows some more depth on how I live and prioritize my life

I look at the demands of a surgeons lifestyle similar to that of an NBA basketball player

I even had a colleague and friend who has been in the NBA on staff with 4 different organizations performance team tell me - “makes sense why you work with surgeons - they’re the athletes of the professional world”

Sure the optics are different but the demands are similar.

High performance.
Long hours.
Physical wear and tear.
Mental pressure.
The need to recover well so you can do it again tomorrow.

You cannot expect elite output from your body while neglecting the inputs that support it.

That’s true in the NBA.
And it’s true in surgery.

Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to work with NBA players like

The biggest thing I’ve learned?

High performers don’t leave their physical health to chance.

They treat it like part of the job.

I believe surgeons should do the same.

Protecting your body is part of protecting your career.

Most physicians are waiting to feel motivated again.

That’s the trap.

Energy and motivation usually improve AFTER you start moving — not before.

The physicians who stay consistent don’t rely on motivation.

They reduce friction.
They start small.
And they keep showing up even when life gets chaotic.

Had a consult a couple days back and as he is rattling off his equipment he has at home, he referred to his Peloton as a “clothes hanger”

I’m not trashing these pieces of equipment

They can be good solid tools in any fitness program but there has to be a plan and some accountability built around it…

Otherwise you end up with a 5 figure “clothes hanger”

This is a pic from my talk last month…well, after my talk

A surgeon had some questions about her knee pain

After about 5 minutes of back and forth I could tell if I really wanted to help her it was going to be more than just a discussion and her doing what I recommended

Way more powerful if I see her move and understand what could be contributing to her pain

So I said, “wanna go to the gym for a minute so I can see you move?”

I could have stopped with the surface level advice but that’s not how I operate

The better I can understand you then the better I can help you

Physicians - you deserve a level of precision and care with your health that matches the standard you hold yourselves to professionally. And that’s why I do what I do

Yeah, go to our daughters gymnastics meet and then her dance recital

She had fun

Facing our fears and taking them head on is the only way we change our lives

For me, it was public speaking

I let it negatively impact me both on a person and professional for way too long until I did something about it over 10 years ago

I hired a professional public speaking coach
Consumed all the books and podcasts I could
Did everything I could to prepare

None of that would have mattered though had I not actually put myself into situations where I was speaking in public

I needed to do it over and over again so I could get comfortable with the discomfort that came along with it

Nowadays, the crowds are bigger. Won’t lie - it still gets me nervous and the adrenaline going

But I’ll continue to do it because it’s required to live a higher quality of life (at least for me). And to help more physicians. And to get into more rooms and connect with different groups of physicians

And physicians- maybe the way I feel about public speaking you feel about your health.

Hiding.

Hoping nobody will notice the 20 lbs you’ve put on over the last couple of years

Hoping nobody else sees the exhaustion that you feel

Despite being frustrated beyond belief you haven’t found a way to get on track but you’re hoping that eventually the motivation will strike

It might, but it won’t last. You can rely on motivation. It comes and goes. And when it’s not there, neither will your routine

And acquiring more information won’t do you any good. You know all you need to know to get started

You just don’t know how to build a plan that works with your schedule and how to hold yourself accountable

Find someone who does. Whether it’s me or somebody else. It doesn’t matter

What does matter is you don’t continue to hide and let the years go by while your quality of life continues to decline and eventually your lifespan

If this lit something inside of you, then good

It shows you care

Now, take one action that you know you can consistently execute and put it into action

Will it help you make significant progress in the short term?

Most likely not

But you’ll feel better after a couple weeks of doing whatever it is you choose and you’ll be setting yourself up to be successful when you do implement the big needle movers in the future
