The Horizons Project presents the “Who’s That Girl?” Media Project supported by the Michigan Department of Community Health’s (MDCH) Health Disparities Reduction Minority Health Section (HDRMHS) September 21, 2012 at Wayne State University’s Student Center in Hilberry Rooms B and C from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
The “Who’s That Girl?” media project is a marketing effort to change media and societal perceptions of the transgender community. This project challenges popular perceptions of transgender women by exploring the lives and stories of five women who have experienced harassment, discrimination, and neglect.
Transgender individuals face a number of challenges that place them at greater risk for HIV/AIDS, including extreme discrimination, homelessness, survival s*x, and unsafe hormone and silicone injection practices. The exact number of transgender youth and young adults living with HIV/AIDS remains unknown. Transgender individuals are routinely included in the men who have s*x with men (MSM) risk category by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and surveillance data is rarely uniformly collected. We do know, however, that MSM was the mode of transmission for 72% of all HIV cases in 13-19 year-old males, and 75% of the HIV cases in 20-24 year-old males in the Detroit Metropolitan Area (DMA). Given transgender youth are included in this category, it is imperative that we develop trans-specific HIV prevention education programs. The “Who’s That Girl?” media project is one of many concentrated efforts by MDCH and their funded organizations to address this need.
Five transgender women were selected to be showcased for this very important project. They have overcome much diversity and stand today as role models in their communities. Please join us to celebrate their achievements. The “Who’s That Girl?” event will include a panel discussion with the participants, the unveiling of media campaign materials conceptualized and developed entirely by the participating women, and performances by local artists. Dinner and refreshments will be provided. With strong support and the necessary resources, we can contribute to ending HIV/AIDS. Come and help us celebrate the beginning of this new era.
