There is an alligator-shaped figurehead on a Great Lakes shipwreck, and it is one of those details that reminds me why you can dive the same wreck repeatedly without really seeing all of it.

On the first dive, you tend to see the ship. You notice its size, orientation and major features while figuring out where everything is. Go back enough times and you start noticing the smaller things—the hardware, construction details, machinery and odd pieces like this that give the wreck some personality.

I have always thought that is one of the rewards of Great Lakes wreck diving. The wreck doesn’t have to change for the dive to be different. Sometimes you just have to slow down enough to notice something you swam past the last time.

And sometimes that something happens to look like an alligator.
