There is a difference between choosing yourself and being selfish.
Being selfish says: My needs matter and yours don’t.
Choosing yourself says: Your needs matter, but mine do too.
Choosing yourself isn’t about taking from other people to get what you want. It’s about knowing your limits without giving all of yourself away.
There is nothing loving about giving so much of yourself away that eventually there is barely any YOU left.
You can care about someone else’s feelings without making them more important than your own.
You can love someone and still say no.
You can consider someone else’s needs without abandoning yours.
You can disappoint someone and still be a good person.
Choosing yourself doesn’t mean you stop caring about other people. It means you stop leaving yourself out of the equation.
It’s okay to choose yourself, even if it disappoints others.
Love,
Melanie
