When we think about aging at home, the conversation often becomes: “Is it still safe?”
But safety isn't the only question worth asking.
Maybe the laundry is downstairs, and those trips are becoming exhausting.
The shower is manageable, but getting in and out takes more concentration than it used to.
The yard you once loved caring for now feels like another thing on the list.
Groceries are harder to carry in.
Rooms on another floor are used less and less.
None of these things necessarily means the home is unsafe. And they certainly don't automatically mean it's time to move.
They may simply be signs that the home needs to change along with you.
Sometimes a small modification helps. Sometimes it's changing how a space is used, hiring someone for a task that has become difficult, or bringing in a little support.
There is a lot of room between “everything is fine” and “it's time to move.”
Before asking, “Can I still live here?” try asking:
“What would make living here work better for me?”
