Leaving the shop this evening and walked out to a group of 5 ish kids blazing down the business sidewalk in front of the shop. I let them know that riding on a business sidewalk is illegal so be extra careful to which they replied "shut up Karen". I think this generation is going to be alright 🤣

Quick size comparison of the macfox X7(L) & M16 vs the mototec 60v

I have been riding the X7(L) for a few days now and overall I have enjoyed it. This thing is much larger than a mototec and in my opinion more intimidating looking while it's coming towards you. I have only had one person tell me I can't ride it on the bike path but they quickly apologized when I pointed out it had pedals and the class 2 tag on the frame. I will be making an adapter kit so I can install the mototec splash guards to it just for the love of the game.

The M16 is about the same size as the mototec 48v and 60v but comes with cable brakes, smaller battery/range, non adjustable front suspension, smaller seat and not designed for a rear passenger

I'm just finishing up a 22 hour work day but wanted to give a quick update on the mototec's.

Before we get into this I want to make it clear I personally don't care what you allow or do but when it has a direct effect on a business I own and operate I have to abide by the laws and regulations.

The issue:

Although the mototec's are restricted to 20mph (if bought from us) and under 100 pounds and meet all requirements to be used as a scooter most of them are not being kept that way.

Very few of them every come in for service without the speed restriction removed or tampered with. We all see it daily with them doing 30+ down sidewalks and on the bike path. This has caused an outrage in the community and the police department is sick of it and due to them being allowed to be un restricted like this the laws have gotten very strict and now deemed illegal (even for the few that have never tampered with the restriction).

The updated enforcement is now not allowing a speed restriction to count as the "top speed" unless it has pedals equipped by the manufacturer.

He is what I am currently working on:

I am waiting on a few documents to get processed and a final approval but assuming I have no issues we will be partnering with another company (Snark-E manufacturing). This company will manufacturer custom e moto style scooters. They will buy used mototec's, replace several components and then sell a custom e moto style scooter with a manufacturer max speed of 20mph. This will be a hard set and restricted top speed as that is the law and the only way to ride them legally. The frame will be tagged with a Snark-E id stating the date, frame ID, weight and top speed. Lots of details to get worked out but for those that enjoy riding a scooter that has the appearance of an e moto this is best option I have.

Little update to our product line.

As I'm sure most of you are aware, Ankeny has banned about 85% of all items we sell. Any item that resembles a dirtbike, any item over 100 pounds and any item with a manufacturer max speed of over 20mph. This removes all scooters we sell that adults can ride and only leaves 3 youth size scooters (S2 base, S2 pro, S2 SE). In order to keep the company alive and around to still over repairs and after sales services I have pulled a "if you can't beat them, join them" approach. We are now partnered with macfox class 2 e bikes.

These bikes are fully legal for any age and are legal anywhere a bikecycle is legal, sidewalks, bike paths, bike lanes and even roads and highways.

I have been riding one for a few days to get a good feel for it just as i do anything I sell. From what I have tested I personally feel the x7(L) is the best bang for your buck vs the other models but I will stock all of them once we get some more room. If you have any questions please let me know I'm happy to answer them. I am attaching pictures with prices of all the models.

With how Ankeny is trying to enforce the new ordinance, one of these items requires the rider to be 16, valid drivers license with a motorcycle endorsement, insurance, registration and DOT inspection and only used on the road. The other item can be used by anyone, any age anywhere.

As a reminder to all of our customers.

Our business insurance covers us for sales and services on electric scooters. We have run into several issues that have required us to use our insurance when the rider of a device has hurt themselves or someone else. Our insurance was very clear that we are not covered for any lawsuits or legal expenses on any devices that do not meet the legal definition of an electric scooter. If you own a mototec and the speed restriction has been modified or removed, we cannot service it, if you have a scooter that goes over 20mph, we cannot service it. This is not me personally trying to tell you I don't want your business this is me protecting myself and my business and this is what the requirements are to do so. I am attaching the legal definition of what Iowa has defined as an electric scooter for reference.

We were told today that an Ankeny highschool called a group of kids in the office to tell them they can't ride their mototec's to school since they are not legal. I promptly contacted the police department and inquired about this as we spoke last week and I was told they are still classified as scooters since they are under 100 pounds and the speed is locked to 20mph. I will update this post with what I hear back.

From what the kids were told the bikes have the ability to go over 20mph so just being locked to 20mph doesn't count. I explained that every scooter that has a 20 mph max speed isn't the max speed it magically stops at it is a restriction that can easily be bypassed. If they respond with the reply that it's too easy to adjust the speed past 20mph I already have several solutions ready to roll out if needed.

Mototec 48v and 60v update.

48v:
The most recent order arrived with a few different parts than the previous bikes have had. The biggest change was the brake levers and calipers. The new version doesn't have the brake sensor that cuts power when you apply the brake. This also means our brake light kit will not work on this version of bike (we are calling this gen 4). Although this is a bummer the bright side is the brake pads and calipers are bigger so they will have more clamping force and more stopping power than the previous version.

60v:
I am still waiting to get a reply but I am assuming it's for the same reason the Iowa DNR attorney contacted us over the past few weeks. We have all seen the news and the crack down on e moto's. According to federal law if it goes over 34 mph and you are selling it from a shop it is required to come with a title since it's a motor vehicle. The last 2 orders of 60v have all had the unrestricted speed reduced from 42mph down to 34mph and the max peak power dropped from 2950w (3000w) down to around 2500w peak power. We are calling these gen 3 now with this update and will update the website as well.

Tonight I was in the shop after I closed just catching up on work and a group of boys stopped in (maybe 6 in total). They wanted to know if they could buy a few parts and install them and use my tools. Although we really only make money on labor I couldn't say no. Hopefully the boys and or parents will see this and know you guys are awesome! It was like a NASCAR pitstop in there. They each had tools and a specific task and were working together and having a blast. It was absolutely amazing to see. I hope everyone made it home safe before the weather got nasty.
