During the September 11 attacks in 2001, 2,977 people were killed
2,606 in the World Trade Center and in the surrounding area, and 125 at the Pentagon.The attacks remain the deadliest terrorist act in world history.
Most of those who perished were civilians except for 344 firefighters; 71 law enforcement officers who died in the World Trade Center and on the ground in New York City; another law enforcement officer who died when United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania; 55 military personnel who died at the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia
A total of 2,751 victims were confirmed to have died in the initial attacks. In 2007, the New York City medical examiner's office began to add people who died of illnesses caused by exposure to dust from the site to the official death toll.
It has been reported that over 1,400 9/11 rescue workers who responded to the scene in the days and months after the attacks have since died.
Attack Timeline
8:46 a.m. Five hijackers crash American Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
9:03 a.m. Five hijackers crash United Airlines Flight 175 into the South Tower of the World Trade Center.
9:05 a.m. President George W. Bush is informed of the second plane crash. He delivers remarks to the nation 25 minutes later.
9:37 a.m. Five hijackers crash American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon.
9:42 a.m. The Federal Aviation Administration grounds all civilian planes in U.S. airspace and prohibits departures.
9:59 a.m. The South Tower of the World Trade Center collapses in a mere 10 seconds.
10:03 a.m. Four hijackers crash United Airlines Flight 93 in a field near Shanksville, Pa.
10:28 a.m. The North Tower of the World Trade Center collapses after burning for 102 minutes.
