Despite growing up in small towns without a track to train on, Taylor Eddington of Healy and Boomchain Loucks of Wrangell closed out decorated careers by dominating the competition at the Track & Field State Championships. Each were named ASAA’s DII Outstanding Athlete of the Meet. Each were selected to be our Alaska Athlete of the Week co-winners.

Also receiving votes: The Bailey girls of the South High girls soccer team, Unalakleet track star Ourea Busk, North Pole HS baseball player Stephen Langer, Dimond baseball player Dax O’Brien, and Colony softball player Taylor Passard.

Just a freshman, Taylor Passard is just too good to ignore.

The Colony softball superstar on Friday became the first freshman to win Gatorade Alaska Player of the Year. The day before, the shortstop belted two homers and led the Knights to two wins at the ASAA Division I state tournament in Fairbanks.

On Thursday, Passard helped the Knights go 1-1 in pool play before beating Service 17-9 in the quarterfinals during which she went yard and matched her season high with six RBIs.

In three games on the day, she went 8-for-12 with two home runs, a triple, double and 11 RBIs. And that’s why she’s considered the best player in the state.

The ASAA Division I state baseball tournament was injected with new blood on Thursday.

West Valley, Juneau-Douglas and Dimond each ended lengthy droughts in postseason openers by claiming winner’s bracket victories at Mulcahy Stadium to give the final four a different look.

West Valley snapped a 14-game overall losing streak at state dating back to 2015, Juneau ended its five-game skid in the first round going back to 2018 and Dimond advanced to the state semifinals for the first time since 2011.

Repeat winners, sweeps, and historic times were the name of the game at the ASAA/First National Bank Alaska Track & Field State Championships.

Tri-Valley’s Taylor Eddington pulled off a rare feat in winning the 100, 200, 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, while Wrangell’s Boomchain Loucks and Delta Junction’s Iris Haas captured the distance triple crowns. The Homer girls and Sitka boys repeated as Division II team champions.

Kennedi Gaines is a blur on the basketball court. Quicker than quick, she blows by defenders like they were standing still or zigzags around them like a slalom skier.

The Bartlett scoring machine has piled up as many as 52 points in a game and totaled 1,409 in her first two seasons of high school, putting her on pace to break the state’s all-time girls record. In the classroom, Gaines remains idle, soaking up knowledge like a sponge, yet applying the same fire and desire she brings to the hardwood.

Whether it be on the gridiron or in the throwing ring, when Deuce Alailefaleula is firing on all cylinders, he’s simply unstoppable.

The Bartlett senior launched the shot put 53 feet, 3.5 inches to collect his third straight title, while Chugiak’s Benjamin Hiestand netted his second state title in the discus with a throw of 168-3, helping the Mustangs defend their team title at the ASAA/First National Bank Alaska Track & Field State Championships.

Dimond’s Nevaeh Watkins and West’s Kendall Barnett proved versatile yet focused in their state title runs, with Watkins capturing titles in the 100, 200 and 100 hurdles, while Barnett sped to victories in the 800, 1,600 and ran a leg on the winning 4×400 relay.

The juniors were instrumental point-scorers for their respective teams, while Chugiak charged to their fifth-straight title at the ASAA/First National Bank Alaska Track & Field State Championships.
