Hey, sports fans! It's been over a couple of days since I have made a post, so I thought I would write about who I am and what I do here.

But before I go historic on you all, Sven's is still open 9 A. M. to 5 P.M. Monday through Friday, Saturday officially 9 to 3, (but I often stay open to 5. Sundae, I have been in more than I haven't, but I recommend that you call (406-563-7988) just to make sure I'm here. Recently, I caught a RUMOR that I had closed, I think that may be due to the big sign on the corner was reinstalled near the top of the building. Harder to notice it UP THERE. I am hoping to restore it to it's original location so you know I'm still here. Might need some help on this.

So, back to the races...

Some of you know I have been at this job for a while. I first took up road bike racing in 1975. Didn't get many races back then, as there weren't many races, or racers, in Montana at the time.

My first bike shop job was in 1976 in Whitefish for the summer. Mostly assembled new bikes and minor repair work.

I served in the Air Force from 1978 to 1982. My main assignment was in Ramstein, Germany. There I learned what real b**r was, and I rode my brains out while stationed there. Few places compare to Europe for the quality of bike riding, miss that to this day. Color me spoiled.

After the service, I returned to Whitefish, were I had a small business as a commercial artist and sign maker. I also started repairing bikes for neighbors and friends. by 1985, the bike shop I was buying my "supplies" from, Glacier Cyclery, offered me a job as a mechanic. I worked for Ron and Jan Brunk from 1985 to 1991. Mountain bikes were just getting going back then, it was interesting being in on this sport so close to its beginning. I assembled WAY LOTS of new bikes, and a pretty heavy repair load as well.

I also started a Monday night mountain bike ride in the surrounding hills, which grew from 6 riders it's first year, to several groups and around 75 (or more?) by 1991.

In 1992, feeling my oats, I started my own bike shop in Whitefish, Timberwolf Bicycle Company. I shared the location with Snowfrog Ski Rentals, a partnership which worked very well, as I could work for them in my off-season, and as my business got bigger, I kept some Snowfrog employees on my payroll for the summer.

In the fall of 1995, I felt the urge to relocate. I had a pretty good idea on what the future of Whitefish was going to be, and it wasn't to my liking. So,
in 1996, I moved myself and my business to Anaconda. I chose to name the shop Sven's Bicycles of Anaconda, (they shoot wolves around here, don't they?) I originally was located at 220 Hickory Street, having converted the main floor of the house into a bike shop. I also rented cross country skiis and ice skates there. But due to an incredibly expensive overhead and business downturn, I reluctantly sold the building in 2007. I have been in my present location since December 2009. Love the location, but it's a small space which I describe as rather "intimate".

So YES, I still sell bikes, but by special order, from Kona and Jamis, with occasional bikes from other makers. Repairs are my life's blood, and I LIKE to work on older bikes, even wally-world wonderbikes. My greatest weakness, as a wrench, is the incessant arms race of parts and bike evolution making technical skills upgrades constant and necessary.
And as long as I am at it, I will keep renting ice skates, (some winter required) and tuning skiis and snowboards, (winter required here, too.)

Thanks for supporting my little endeavor, Sven's Bicycles of Anaconda, for all these years! Drop me a line, or just stop on by, for service or shooting the breeze,
Pete Kurtz, I am the Sven at Sven's.

Hey there, sports fans,
Quick update for the season...
Discovery Ski Area's last day for this season is tomorrow, April 5th,
Also known as Easter Sunday 2026 edition. Which means that Sven's last call for end of season ski and snowboard tunes will be Tuesday April 7th, 5 P.M. When I have completed whatever comes in by then, the tuner will go back into hiding until it re-emerges from it's summer estivation this coming October.
I am taking in bike repairs already, it will just be a little easier to get them done with the ski equipment out of the way!

Thanks for supporting Sven's this winter, I am looking forward to servicing your bicycle needs now that spring has arrived!

Hey there, Sports fans! I am still renting ice skates, so if you're looking to try the rink this weekend, I still have them available. The ice is usable, the smoothest section is the Library corner. The 3rd street side IS VERY ROUGH! Also watch out for holes in the ice scattered around the rink in general. Be aware that if it gets above freezing, any exposed sand turns into a sticky mud that doesn't wash off easily. I will be open 9 to 6 Saturday and Sundae this weekend!

Hey there Sports Fans, I hope y'all had a fantastic summer, especially if you overdosed on the bike riding part.

Now that it is November, after a puzzling summer for myself and the shop, I am gearing up for the Ski and Snowboard season, and the Ice Skating season as well. Both machines are in the shop and are now at your service for the winter. As well as my bad sense of humor. This is my 30th season of offering these services for you in Anaconda!

The Kennedy Commons should have refrigeration for the rink this season, I am hoping it brings more consistent skating conditions for all you skating fans! And less surprises, too.

With the uncertain economic conditions we are going through, I will not be increasing my labor rates for ski and snowboard work.
Ski and snowboard full tunes will be 45 bucks, unless they are REALLY trashed, that's extra! I offer less expensive repair and tune options that are less expensive.

Ice skate rental equipment will be in the shop around Thanks-Giving Day, but the ice skate sharpening is available now. I will be keeping ice skate rental rates and skate sharpening rates at last year's prices.

Sven's Bicycles of Anaconda is OPEN Monday through Saturday
9 A. M. through 5 P.M. As winter business gets busier, I will be open all 7 days of the week, with later closing hours for Christmas Week skate rentals.

Bike repairs! I will be accepting repairs until the Ice skate rental equipment is in. That takes up most of my shop space until it is out for the spring. Any bike work I take in during the winter has lower priority than ski, snowboard and ice skate work. You really don't want me touching your skiis after I have done bike work. Not glamorous.

Any questions you may have about Sven's Bicycles, hours and services, Please call me at 1 (406) 563-7988, Please leave a message on the machine if I don't answer it. I can be reached by email at [email protected]

Thank you for letting me serve your Cycling, Skiing and Ice Skating needs for these last 29 years. I look forward to serving you yet again this winter.

Welcome to Spring, Sports Fans! Discovery Ski Area is in their final week of operation for the 24/25 ski season, closing on April 6th. Last call for ski and snowboard tunes and repairs is Monday April 7th. Ski work will have priority over Bike Repairs until I have finished what comes in by end of day April 7th. I AM ACCEPTING BICYCLE REPAIRS NOW. Then it's all bikes, all the time until next October. Had a good winter for the ski tuning and skate business, once winter finally showed up! Thank you for your support and friendship this winter, and as always, I look forward to serving your bicycling needs for the summer.

Thanks,

Happy Yuletime, Sports Fans! Sven's is now open 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. every day for ice skate rentals through January 5th. (If the rink is BAD I may close at 6 P.M.)
The rink is currently skateable, but rough or unusable in some spots. Not to mention that this lousy warm weather ain't helping anyone. I check the rink daily mornings and most evenings, so if you need a skate report, call me (Pete Kurtz, AKA Sven) at (406) 563-7988 for current conditions.
Thanks for your support!

Hey sports fans! Sven's world update for Wednesday the 11th of December Twentytwentyfour! With this lousy (especially if you're a skier or ice skater) weather, I am going to go back to 2023 ski repair rates and ice skate rental rates:
Ski and snowboard standard tunes will remain at 40 bucks, extra dough may be charged if you really messed them up.

I have itemized rates for the other ski and snowboard repairs and services, please call for quotes.

And I will be keeping Skate rental rates at last year prices, $8.00 for a skates size 4 and larger, $5.00 for single blades 3 1/2 and smaller, and the little double bladed skates remain at $3.00

IT LOOKS LIKE THE RINK at the Kennedy Commons MAY BE open this weekend! I will post it when this happens.

I also have 10 pair of good used ice skates for sale- these are not my old rental skates. As sized:

Men's 11 double leather figure skate
Men's 10 Jackson Softec figure
Women's 9 Jackson Softec figure
Women's 8 Lake Placid figure

Hockey 9 CCM 92
9 American 20
8 Easton Ultralite Pro (nicest ones)
7 Cougar
6 CCM 2092.
All skates will have a fresh grind, priced according to quality and condition.
Women's 7 Crossfire figure

Hope I didn't give everyone a heart attack with my earlier post, conditions warrant that I keep the old prices for the winter.

Thanks for your support and friendship, Pete from Sven's

Hey Sports Fans! Don't often make 2 posts in a day, but why not...
I am putting up 2 of my personal bikes for sale if anyone is interested.

First bike is a 2015 Kona Abracadabra, Kona's premium enduro bike that year. Size medium (16") Like new condition, with less than 100 miles of use. This bike originally sold for $5500, reasonably modern suspension. Bicycle Blue Book had a suggested value of $1700 on it 2 years ago. It does have 26" wheels, spare tires.

Second bike is a 2018 Kona Unit, medium size. It is currently set up as a single speed, but it can be equipped with gears as well. I set it up with NICE components. This model is highly sought after by the bike packing community. I need to come up with an appropriate asking price for this one. This one is a 29er, set up toobless.

Anyone interested in either of these bikes please call me at the shop, 1 (406) 563-7988
Thanks in advance, Pete from Sven's

Hey There, Sports Fans!
Today, April 8th, is the last day of ski season at Discovery, and with that Mr. Sven here will accept ski and snowboard tunes up to April 10th. As soon as I am done with whatever walks in by then, I will put the tuner away for the summer. I plan on returning the tuner and skate sharpener to the shop around the 1st of October. Ski work will have priority until all the ski stuff is done.

I have changed to summer shop hours:
9 A.M to 5 P.M. Monday through Friday,
and open Saturday from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M.

I am REALLY looking forward to getting some good riding in the woods and on the road soon, as we now are getting longer days, and (c'mon!) warmer weather. And I am here to help you do the same thing...

Thank you to all my ski, snowboard and skating customers who pulled me through this disappointing winter, It was my pleasure to serve you. It will be my pleasure to keep your bike(s) happy and healthy for this year!
