Good read.

I recently listened to a webinar about feeding horses and learned a really interesting fact I wanted to share!
There was a question about horses getting choke, and the veterinarian (I donโ€™t remember her name) responded that soaking your horses feed in water greatly reduces the possibility of choke (most everyone knows that) but she also said the placement of the feed bin is a big factor as well!
Letโ€™s say you feed about 2lbs of grain:
With the feed bin on the ground, the horse will chew about 1000 times.
With the feed bin placed at chest height, saliva production is significantly decreased, and the horse will only chew 350-500 times!
Horses are grazers, and are designed to eat with their head at ground level. (Donโ€™t even get me started on people that hang their hay nets high enough for a giraffe.. so bad!๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ)

But feeding on the ground can have its troubles: Iโ€™ve dealt with so many horses that want to paw and tip over their feed bin, which is very annoying especially if they spill their expensive feed and supplements all over the ground. So Iโ€™m always coming up with better ways to do things, and I have had a lot of luck with using tires! (See photo) You can find a feed bin that fits perfectly in an old tire, and then you have a pretty stable ground level feeder. ๐Ÿ˜
(Side note: if a horse paws excessively when eating, it can be an indication of a tooth problem, or possibly ulcers.)
