Infant Swimming Resource Iowa Survival Swimming Skills for Children

❌❌❌❌
Please avoid floatation devices when exposing your children to water. Children will learn the drowning position using these devices. If they were to fall into water without a floatie or adult supervision, what would happen? Would they float? The answer is sadly, no. This gives them no chance at survival.

There are so many things wrong with the promotion of this product.. putting a child in a floatie like this is not “much safer”. You are not giving them a “superpower” you are giving them a false sense of security- false skills that will only fail them in an emergency.
If swimming were “as natural as walking” there would be zero drownings ever. Child or adult. So many moms & dads would have their precious children back in their arms & their world wouldn’t be utterly destroyed at the loss of a child if that were true.
Self rescue skills can give your child a chance at survival if an emergency were to happen but no child should be left to be “independent in the water”.

Please do your child a favor & give them the CORRECT information they need when it comes to water safety. Anything that puts their body in a vertical position will teach them the drowning position.

Here’s some real life ISR lesson footage for ya..

“Will my kid ever stop crying?”
This is a question us instructors get a lot. The answer… “maybe!”

Here are two amazing girlies who will graduate on Friday.. (six weeks of ISR lessons).. they both have given me their fair share of loud opinions 😉 BUT LOOK AT THEM GO! Fully skilled. Submerged, rolling to their backs, floating & breathing.. maintaining that float for minutes. One girl finally is giving me some smiles & asking to do more swims. The other girl still would rather be out of the water & in mom’s arms & that’s ok! She is solid & knows how to save her own life if she ever fell in water unsupervised. Both girlies are equally amazing & have been a joy to work with.

My face EVERY SINGLE TIME a kid floats on their own, even for a second. It never ever gets old.I love my job! 💙💚

HELLO SUMMER! Here are some things you can put into place to help keep your children safe.

Layers of protection:
1. Effective adult supervision - don’t assume others are watching
2. Locks and alarms/chimes on exterior doors
3. Pool fence and self locking gate
4. Learn CPR in case there is an emergency situation on your hands
5. Of course, ISR self rescue skills if those are available to you in your area. Use the Instructor Locator on www.infantswim.com to find an instructor closest to you!

Every second of every day our senses take in 11 million pieces of data but can only process about 40-60 pieces of it. The rest our minds become blind to. This is called Inattention Blindness. We all have it…all of us. We ALL miss things that happen right in front of us, because other things are also competing for our attention at the same time.

It doesn’t matter how badly we want to see something happen. We can and do miss important things.

Drownings are easily missed. They are silent, they happen almost entirely under the water and they are fast…very fast. There isn’t much happening that will draw attention to it when it happens so other things will easily distract us from noticing it.

Bottom line:

Don’t think it can’t happen to you…it can.

Don’t think you watch every second of every day…you don’t.

Don’t think parents are neglectful because it happened to them…they weren’t.

Don’t think your child won’t try to get to water when they aren’t meant to be there and you aren’t watching…they will.

Don’t think just because it hasn’t happened yet that it won’t…It can. It might.

Don’t think supervision is enough for your child…it’s not.

Get your kids skilled in the water.

Put barriers between them and the water. Safety fences, locks, alarms. Don’t forget windows and dog doors too.

Designate a water watcher for swimmers and use one-on-one touch supervision with non-swimmers.

Watch the kids closely during the minutes and hours after swim time. That’s when they are most likely to try to get back in without you and without a device.

Don’t use flotation devices in pools, so that kids can understand what their own bodies can and can’t do in the water and have a healthier respect for it.

Always use life jackets in and around open water because of the uncontrolled nature of it. Use them whether your child can swim or not.

Don’t leave toys in the pool-it just tempts the kids even more.

Learn CPR.

Water safety is for EVERYONE because drowning can happen to ANYONE.
