What's a deadlift❓⁠⁠

To put it simply its picking something heavy up off the ground and standing up with it.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
We're all about functional movements (exercises that mimic how you move in real life) and deadlifts are as functional as it gets. ⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Think picking up a heavy school 🏫 bag, picking up your pet🐕 for a 🛁bath or snow ❄️ Shoveling! ⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Training the deadlift will make picking up anything from the ground easier. ⁠⁠
⁠⁠
When good technique is learned and reinforced in the gym, risk of injury also goes ⬇️! ⁠⁠
⁠⁠
That's why we teach the deadlift in all of our youth classes! ⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Our preschoolers are introduced to the positions of the movement without any weight, our kids work with light medicine balls, kettlebells or dumbbells, and in our teens are learn the barbell deadlift! 💪⁠⁠
⁠⁠
However in all classes (even in Kanna's adult classes) safe and effective technique takes priority over how much weight is lifted. ⁠⁠

Looking for a game to play with a group of kids, while keeping them physically distanced⬅️➡️? ⁠⁠

Try 🎲DICE FIGHT. We closed out kids class last week with this and it was a hit! ⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Divide into two teams of 1-6 and give each person their own die. Select "team names' for some bonus fun. ⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Before each round of play Identify a "math" captain and choose a 20s penalty hold (think high plank, low plank, hollow, bottom of the squat, stand on one foot, down dog)⁠⁠
⁠⁠
During a round of play each team member rolls their die. The math captain on each team ➕ adds their teams numbers together. ⁠⁠
⁠⁠
The team with the higher total, scores a point. The losing team has to do the chosen 20 second penalty hold. For some extra smiles☺️ play some music and the winning team gets to dance 🕺🏾💃🏻during the hold. ⁠⁠

Repeat for a set time period or number of rounds. The team with the most points wins🏆! ⁠⁠

🥕🥚🥜Macronutrients are the nutritional building blocks of the food we eat...fat, protien & carbohydrate. ⁠⁠

When we teach about macronutrients in our youth classes we sometimes ask a trick question, "Which of these are bad😈?"⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Almost everyone will say Fat or Carbohydrates. ⁠⁠
⁠⁠
The real answer is none of them are bad! There are healthy options in each macronutrient group & our bodies are designed to use them all.❣️⁠⁠
⁠⁠
In a simple lesson, woven into a fitness class we are able to help our young athletes reframe the good/bad mentality of food so prevalent in our culture into a mindset of balance ⚖️ and informed choice. And of course give them the knowledge that will help them make those choices ✅!⁠⁠

Ever noticed how toddlers pick stuff off the floor or play with things on the ground...they SQUAT! No one needs to teach toddlers to do this, because its a natural human movement. ⁠⁠
⁠⁠
However toddlers grow up, go to school, sit in chairs and as a result often lose their natural ability to squat well.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
That is unless they continue to squat as they grow; maintaining and reinforcing healthy movement patterns. ⁠⁠
⁠⁠
The squat is an integral part of functional fitness and staple exercise in all of our youth classes. ⁠⁠

Here are 4️⃣ reasons students should exercise: ⁠⁠

1) Physical activity stimulates new cell growth in the brain. ⁠⁠
2) Physical activity increases mood boosting hormones⁠⁠
3) Physical activity replaces brain energy stores⁠⁠
