Alva Gun Range

Alva Gun Range Alva’s Park for Shooting Sports Manager Brown reported back to the group after a few weeks with good news. The idea was proposed to the Alva City Council.

October, 28th 2010, a group of nearly fifty area residents met with Alva City Manager Steven Brown, to discuss the possibilities of locating a Gun Range on city property north of Alva. Over the next several weeks the Alva City Council took necessary action to set aside the area for a gun range. Woods Co. Commissioner Clint Strawn has been very supportive of the range project and provided help in t

he form of dirt work early on. Then while working in the area Max Jantz Excavating, LLC donated a tremendous amount of earth moving work. City of Alva and Woods County’s dozer returned numerous times over the next year and a half. The dirt work has been completed; asphalt millings have been put in place for parking. The project remains a work in progress but is open to those who are willing to follow the posted rules for their safety and the safety of others.

Northwest Oklahoma has been blessed with an abundance of rain lately. The rain has been especially wonderful for the grass and weeds. Due to standing water and very soggy ground, the gun range has been impossible to mow. A portion of the 300 yard range was mowed today. I gave up after getting the mower stuck twice. The south 100 yard range is still under water, muddy, and the grass and weeds have taken over. Please refrain from using the South 100 yard range until it has had a chance to dry and be mowed.

And as common sense would dictate, DO NOT DRIVE YOUR VEHICLES ONTO THE RANGE WHEN IT IS OBVIOUSLY NOT DRY!!!!!
Keeping the range mowed and in decent shape is a time consuming task and it makes it even more difficult when there are ruts that have to be mowed over.

Thank You all for your patronage and happy shooting.

"Come join Artemis for a day of s***t shooting and dove hunting in Alva, Oklahoma! First, we’ll head out to the range to practice, shooting s***t and going over bird hunting safety. Next, we’ll head out to public lands where we’ll post up and (hopefully) let some shots fly. We can’t promise we’ll harvest any doves, but we can promise a great day with fellow sportswomen in the field!
Clay targets will be provided, but attendees are responsible for bringing their own equipment, including but not limited to: shotgun, *shotgun shells, and chair/bucket to sit on while hunting.
*Lead-free ammunition is not required, but we do encourage its usage because of the negative effects lead ammunition can have on nongame wildlife.
*Though we are always excited to help our friends learn and grow, this is a group hunting event and is tailored for women who have been dove hunting before. This is not a guided trip."
