Our girl Malaya! Congratulations on your recognition! You deserve it!

Stalwart - a loyal, reliable, and hardworking supporter or participant in an organization or team.

Kansas Pregame is collaborating with coaches across the state to recognize the key team players flying under the radar of statewide media. Athletes who come to work every day for their team, but may not have the individual statistics to earn the accolades that go along with team success. 🌻We're calling them, Sunflower State Stalwarts.🌻

Malaya Broadwell, Labette County Grizzlies 🏐

Senior Malaya Broadwell quietly assembled an impressive defensive résumé on the volleyball court, piling up elite production on the back row while receiving limited recognition for her work.

Despite the lack of postseason attention, Broadwell’s impact for Labette County was undeniable.

“Malaya was the heart and soul of our team,” head coach Leigh Ann Phillips said. “She is always striving to perfect her craft on the back row and sets the example of how to be a great teammate.”

A three-year starting libero, Broadwell finished her career with 1,248 digs after posting 284 as a sophomore, 448 as a junior and 516 as a senior. She ranked first in Class 4A in digs as a senior and second as a junior, leading the SEK Conference both seasons. In 2025, she added 79 assists and 30 aces while reaching the 1,000 career digs milestone.

Along with her on-court production, Broadwell served as a steady leader for the Grizzlies.

“Malaya is the first to lift others up when they make mistakes or are down, and she is consistently positive,” Phillips said. “Her positive outlook is what makes her so successful.”

Broadwell is committed to continue her volleyball career at Labette County Community College.

“This is the epitome of a kid that anyone would want to coach,” Phillips said.

This will be a longer post, but bear with me, please. It's taken a couple days to process the season is complete. To start, I am so very proud of the way that we ended the season. These young ladies played hard from point 1 to point 25. They didn't falter, and didn't give in. They fought for every point from Hayden. The score may have looked lop sided, but the effort was not. We were outmatched from the get go, but we hung with them with each point. I don't feel one of those points (besides two missed serves), Hayden didn't have to find a way to earn. We pushed as hard as we could. So VERY proud of how our season ended. We played our best volleyball when it counted and that is what our goal was all about.
Secondly, this group of seniors really set the bar high for the following classes. I tasked them with stepping up and helping to change the culture and they responded in form. Each one of these seniors embraced "We over Me" and took on a "family" of underclassmen to mentor. The culture of family that was built this season will carry on, and I want to thank the Seniors for embracing that challenge.
This group of young ladies stepped up to each goal set for them, continued to improve, wanted coaching until the last ball, and loved on each other more than I could have imagined. Our last moments together as a team, were spent with tears, not because it's the end, not because we won't see each other everyday, but because the family that we created this year will be mourned. We will mourn the moments we had, the bonds that were created and the memories made. You don't remember the record, but you remember the moments.
This group is special. Period. They set the bar, they started the culture and they will be missed immensely. I am blessed to be able to have coached this team. Thank you Seniors for all you've done to leave a legacy. You will always be a part of our family........
