HENRY (DOC) and FLORENCE STIBITZ - ASHOF Class of 2025 - Boosters of the Year

The impact of Henry and Florence Stibitz upon Alpena can’t be measured only in wins, losses, or even years of service—but in the lives they shaped and the opportunities they created.

They were never ones to seek the spotlight, but their influence is woven into the very fabric of youth sports in this community.

Henry worked tirelessly behind the scenes—helping lay the groundwork for local skating and hockey, supporting the development of the original ice rink, and giving countless hours as a coach. He didn’t just teach the game; he taught discipline, teamwork, and resilience. As a physician, he went even further—caring for athletes on the sidelines, providing physicals, and making sure generations of kids were safe and ready to play. He was also a student of the game, bringing new ideas in hockey and conditioning back to Alpena, quietly raising the level of play for everyone.

And alongside him, Florence was a true pioneer.

She opened doors for so many young girls in this community—teaching them how to skate, encouraging them to step onto the ice, and promoting ringette as a space where they could compete, belong, and thrive. At a time when opportunities for girls in hockey were limited, Florence made sure they had a place. Because of her, countless young women experienced the joy, confidence, and camaraderie that come from being part of a team.

Together, Henry and Florence didn’t just support youth sports—they built something lasting. They created opportunities where there were none, mentored young athletes, and strengthened this community in ways that continue to ripple forward today.

Their legacy lives on in every player who laces up their skates, every team that takes the ice, and every life touched by their dedication. We thank them—for their vision, their generosity, and their unwavering belief in the young people of Alpena. Your impact will not be forgotten!

Congratulations to Henry (Doc) and Florence Stibitz, ASHOF 2025 Boosters of the Year! Please join us in celebrating their induction next Saturday, June 6th, 2026 at the Aplex! Tickets for the event are $30 and can be purchased at Jimmie Garant’s Party store or through Venmo at .

JOE GENTRY - ASHOF Class of 2025 - Booster of the Year

Joe Gentry’s love for Alpena is undeniable. Giving back to this community is not just something he does, it is who he is.

A glance at his resume makes one thing abundantly clear, Joe Gentry is involved. As the Executive Director of the United Way of Northeast Michigan and a member of the Board of Trustees at Alpena Community College, he already carries significant responsibility. Yet even with these commitments, he continues to give his time and energy selflessly to countless other community efforts.

Joe serves as Race Director for the Dork Brothers 4th of July Race, the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot, and the Aliferis Memorial Races. These are not one-time events. The 4th of July Race has been a community tradition for 47 years, the Aliferis Memorial Race for 25 years, and the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot for 23 years. Under Joe’s leadership, these races have generated thousands upon thousands of dollars, every dollar given back to the community he loves.

He is always the first to arrive and the last to leave. His work ethic is tireless, his dedication unwavering.

Joe was not only an outstanding athlete at Alpena High School and Alpena Community College, but he has also earned the title “Godfather of Running” in our community. He has poured his passion for sports into future generations, mentoring, encouraging, and celebrating young athletes along the way.

Many know him as the man who carefully clips local sports articles from the newspaper and mails them, along with a handwritten note, to the athletes featured. For some, those clippings became the foundation of cherished scrapbooks. More importantly, they became reminders that someone noticed, someone cared, and someone believed in them.

Joe Gentry’s impact reaches far beyond finish lines and race days. His legacy is written in the lives he has touched, the traditions he has sustained, and the community he continues to strengthen every single day. Alpena Sports Hall of Fame Volunteer of the Year is not just an award, it is a reflection of a lifetime of service, heart, and unwavering commitment to Alpena.

Congratulations to Joe Gentry, one of our 2025 Boosters of the Year! Please join us in celebrating his induction next Saturday, June 6th, 2026 at the Aplex! Tickets for the event are $30 and can be purchased at Jimmie Garant’s Party store or through Venmo at .

KERWIN KITZMAN - ASHOF Class of 2025 - Voice of the North

Kerwin was not on the field, the court, or the ice—but for so many of us, the game wasn’t complete without him. He brought sports to life through the airwaves, turning moments into memories and games into stories that connected an entire community. His voice carried the excitement, the tension, and the pride of Alpena athletics into our lives.

If you ever tuned in to a broadcast, you know exactly what made Kerwin special. It wasn’t just that he described the action—it was how he made you feel like you were part of it. Whether it was a packed rink on a winter night or a crisp Friday under the lights, Kerwin had a way of putting you right there in the moment. You didn’t just hear the game—you experienced it.

But what made him truly remarkable was that he understood what those games meant. In a community like Alpena, sports are more than scores and standings. They are tradition, pride, and connection. Kerwin captured that spirit. He gave recognition to athletes who might not otherwise have had the spotlight, and he made sure their efforts, their determination, and their achievements were heard and remembered.

He was a storyteller. He knew the players, their journeys, and the significance behind each game. He celebrated the big plays, but he also appreciated the small moments—the hustle, the teamwork, the perseverance—that often define both sports and life.

Kerwin was a constant supporter of local athletics. His dedication showed in the countless hours he spent preparing, traveling, and making sure that Alpena’s teams had a voice. He wasn’t doing it for attention—he was doing it because he cared deeply about this community and the people in it.

For many young athletes, hearing their name called during one of Kerwin’s broadcasts was something they never forgot. It was a moment of recognition, a sign that their hard work mattered. And for families, friends, and fans, his voice became a shared experience—something that brought people together, no matter where they were.

His legacy lives on in those memories. It lives on in the echoes of games past, in the excitement he shared, and in the connection he helped build across Alpena. He showed us that you don’t have to be on the rink to make an impact—you just have to care, to show up, and to give your voice to something bigger than yourself.

Congratulations to the late Kerwin Kitzman, our 2025 Voice of the North! Please join us in celebrating his induction on Saturday, June 6th, 2026 at the Aplex! Tickets for the event are $30 and can be purchased at Jimmie Garant’s Party store or through Venmo at .
