Please consider becoming a voting member of the Alpena Sports Hall of Fame to help determine the Class of 2026! Current nominations (see Nomination Form also on page) for the Class of 2026 will be voted upon in December 2026, and the chosen inductees will be honored at the 42nd Annual Banquet in 2027!

The Alpena Sports Hall of Fame offers multiple levels of voting membership. Individuals may purchase a 5-Year Membership for $25, a 10-Year Membership for $50, or a Lifetime Voting Membership for $100. New memberships may be selected and purchased at the below link.

We ask that all current and interested voting members complete the following New and Returning Membership form (unless you filled it out in the past few years) so that we might gather contact information for all parties invested in the preservation and continuation of the Alpena Sports Hall of Fame. The form requests information on an email address, voting ballot preferences, membership options, and a favorite Alpena sports memory among other things! We’d appreciate you completing this form in its entirety even if you are a current lifetime member.

The Alpena Sports Hall of Fame is now seeking athlete, coach, and team nominations to be considered for induction as part of the Class of 2026! If you know of an athletics contributor that helped shape the history of sports in the Alpena area, we’d love to hear from you!

Nominated athletes must be at least five years removed from being an active participant in their sport. All nominee accomplishments and contact information must be filled out on a Hall of Fame Nomination Form, and the link can be found below! If you would like to a paper/physical copy of the nomination form, you may pick one up at Jimmie Garant’s Party Store.

Please return all paper nomination forms to Alpena Sports Hall of Fame, PO Box 354, Alpena, MI 49707. Forms can also be given directly to a member of the board including Liz Klemens, Mike Kollien, James Andersen, Mark Jacobs, Nancy Garant, Phil Schultz, Trevor Roznowski, Chris Limback, John Pintar, or Matt Somers.

The completed nomination form deadline for this year is August 28th! Please be sure to have your nominations in by that date! Once nominations are in, the board votes on those nominees to be included on the ballot which is sent to the Association members for the final selection of those for enshrinement.

Thank you to all who attended the 41st Annual Alpena Sports Hall of Fame Banquet held on Saturday, June 6th! What a wonderful evening of celebrating our new inductees, Voices of the North, Boosters of the Year, and Team of the Year!

The Class of 2025 included Lisa (Gallagher) Datema, Brian Stibitz, Becky (Jore) Rommel, and Jaime (VanMassenhove) Bieber! Additionally, the 1967 State Championship Huron Shores Little League Team was honored as Team of the Year, Joe Gentry, Henry (Doc) Stibitz, and Florence Stibitz were honored as Boosters of the Year, and Kerwin Kitzman and John Pines were honored with Voice of the North Awards!

We are so grateful to highlight the accomplishments and contributions of these wonderful individuals and team, and we’d like to thank all of the attendees who made it such a special event! We were wowed by an enthusiastic and supportive crowd!

We already look forward to next year’s banquet and the induction of the Class of 2026! Be on the lookout for more information to come. Thank you all for another incredible year!!!

HENRY (DOC) and FLORENCE STIBITZ - ASHOF Class of 2025 - Boosters of the Year

The impact of Henry and Florence Stibitz upon Alpena can’t be measured only in wins, losses, or even years of service—but in the lives they shaped and the opportunities they created.

They were never ones to seek the spotlight, but their influence is woven into the very fabric of youth sports in this community.

Henry worked tirelessly behind the scenes—helping lay the groundwork for local skating and hockey, supporting the development of the original ice rink, and giving countless hours as a coach. He didn’t just teach the game; he taught discipline, teamwork, and resilience. As a physician, he went even further—caring for athletes on the sidelines, providing physicals, and making sure generations of kids were safe and ready to play. He was also a student of the game, bringing new ideas in hockey and conditioning back to Alpena, quietly raising the level of play for everyone.

And alongside him, Florence was a true pioneer.

She opened doors for so many young girls in this community—teaching them how to skate, encouraging them to step onto the ice, and promoting ringette as a space where they could compete, belong, and thrive. At a time when opportunities for girls in hockey were limited, Florence made sure they had a place. Because of her, countless young women experienced the joy, confidence, and camaraderie that come from being part of a team.

Together, Henry and Florence didn’t just support youth sports—they built something lasting. They created opportunities where there were none, mentored young athletes, and strengthened this community in ways that continue to ripple forward today.

Their legacy lives on in every player who laces up their skates, every team that takes the ice, and every life touched by their dedication. We thank them—for their vision, their generosity, and their unwavering belief in the young people of Alpena. Your impact will not be forgotten!
