Yesterday, Sienna Jones put Wabaunsee High School on the map! With a 5th place finish in The 2023 Kansas City Stampede (one of the largest and most prestigious tournaments in the country), Wabaunsee High School became the smallest school in the history of the tournament to have a medalist or should we say “buckle-ist”! Sienna worked so hard
and our coaching staff is incredibly proud of her effort and work ethic! Still time to build!!

At the 5th Annual Rock Creek Girls Tournament, the girls started off the season strong. Out of the six girls we brought to the tournament, four of them brought home medals! Lots of hand raises (wins) over some great competitors! Not quite the result that some of them wanted but it’s only the first tournament.

Ava Viergever: 6th
Emily Meyer: 5th
Kadence Guinn: 3rd
Sienna Jones: 2nd
Ava Huske: 3rd

Sophia Castillo had a dominant performance with 4 pins, with one of her opponents even telling her to “just pin me” and another telling Coach Miller after “atleast that was quick”. Sophia finished 1st and earned the coaching staffs nomination for Wrestler Of The Week!

Tough first tournament for the Boys team in Wamego! Good competition in every weight class. A lot of hard fought and close matches. But, onward we progress! Lots of matches for everyone. Ups and downs, but a lot of our wrestlers ended the day on a high note, going out with a win for 5th and 7th places finishes.

However, Carson Reves had himself a day! After a year of being sidelined with an injury, Carson came out with three dominant back-to-back pins, took a loss, and had a dominant finish to earn a Third Place medal and received the coaching staffs nomination for Wrestler Of The Week!

Wabaunsee Wrestling Club is selling backpacks provided by our sponsor, Dougie Athletics.

We are offering two different design styles, both of which feature a modernized Charger logo and the word “Chargers” in a unique font on both sides. Each backpack can have your last name added to the center pocket at no additional cost.

All proceeds go towards supporting wrestling in our community at all levels.

📢 🚨Special Announcement🚨📢

We would like offer a special welcome to the newest member of the Wabaunsee Chargers Wrestling Family, our newly hired assistant coach, Cristina Martinez!

Cristina Martinez
Raised by a wrestling coach who was a wrestler his whole life. Wrestled growing with 2 brothers in Kids Club then started wrestling in high school for Manhattan High under legendary coach, Robert Gonzales. As the only female at a very light weight it was a difficult sport to win but that never meant she didn’t put up a fight.

*Coach Martinez wrestled prior to the separation of boys and girls division in high school wrestling.*

When asked about Cristina, Coach Gonzales initially said two words, “Absolute Stud”. He elaborated that Cristina battled and was a lynchpin on the team, helping secure the Indians 2018 Centennial League Championship.

Coach Martinez will be able to work hands-on with our up-and-coming girls program, thus furthering their skills and comprehension of the moves. However, Coach Martinez does not wish to be referred to as "the girls wrestling coach" as her experience on the mat, in practice, and at tournaments relates closely to the boys team as well.

Cristina shared that she "has done the same thing, been through the same stuff they are going through. I learned how to wrestle boys and how to be tough against male competition".

Cristina hopes to inspire kids to put in the work and fight for the things they have a passion for. She has a young daughter, Raegan, who will soon become the Chargers biggest fan!

SEASON OPENER: The Wabaunsee Chargers Girls Team will open the season in Flush this Saturday! We are bringing a roster of 7 girls to this girls only tournament with great competition and some ranked opponent to start the season. The Chargers are taking on The 5th Annual Rock Creek Girls Tournament.

Wrestling will start at 9:30 a.m.

SEASON OPENER: The Wabaunsee Chargers Boys Team will open the season in Wamego this Saturday! We are bringing a full roster and then some to an awesome tournament with great competition to start the season. The Chargers are taking on The 2023 Raider Classic.
