Allentown Hiking Club Join us to get outside and exercise with nature! Our events are open to the public and free! www.allentownhikingclub.org

Allentown Hiking Club is a Pennsylvania nonprofit with membership in the Keystone Trails Association, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, and the Lehigh Gap Nature Center. We maintain 10.3 miles of the Appalachian Trail, including the Allentown Shelter (north of New Tripoli). We offer hikes and other outdoor events, open to the general public and led by experienced club members and other local experts.

I got out on the Allentown Hiking Club section of the Appalachian Trail between Fort Franklin Rd and Rt 309 with an excellent crew of volunteers from the club on Tuesday 8/25 to clear seven blowdowns and a leaner identified by a member of the club who walks that section regularly. It took us 4.5 hours on the trail to cover about 1.5 miles out and back, carrying my chainsaw, gear, and PPE, and clearing all the downed trees. I was glad to have this crew of 6, especially when dealing with two huge multi-trunk blowdowns, which I highlight here. It is hard work, but brings a great feeling of accomplishment for all involved! Thanks to Heidi for her hard work on the trail and her photos.

Glad to get out on the trail yesterday before it heated up too much and after Appalachian Trail Conservancy's ridge runner for central PA identified 5 new blowdowns on the Allentown Hiking Club's section of AT south of Fort Franklin Road. In a good half-day's work, my capable crew and I were able to hike the ~5.5 miles and clear all 5 blowdowns. If this kind of work looks like fun to you, contact Kerry from AHC, because we can always use more volunteers! (see captions, and thanks to Heidi and Sue for the pictures!)

Saturday it was a humid day but that did not stop our hikers from enjoying the Sand Springs - Tom Lowe Trails Loop Hike with a lunch visit to the Eagle's Nest Shelter on the Appalachian Trail.

If you ever wanted to meet interesting hikers with big hearts who enjoy the forest and sharing lots of sweat and laughs then pleased join us for one of our hikes or cool events !

Yesterday’s steamy temperatures and nearby thunderstorms didn’t deter folks from enjoying the club’s annual summer picnic. There was plenty of good food to enjoy along with great conversation. And as is often the case, we were treated to a brilliant sunset to close out the evening!
