Young athletes often struggle with self talk. They put pressure on themselves to perform well. This can be a result of personal growth or trying to make someone proud. Regardless, athletes who see mistakes as a bad thing often find themselves emotional messes during tough competition. One thing that can help these athletes is a key word. During the 4 part mental confidence training, athletes will learn the use of a key word and how to apply it. As with anything, this takes practice to master, starting early can help them master the skill so when competition comes up, they will automatically use it. Mental training is the same as physical training, if you don’t practice it everyday it becomes weak.
