Today we remember and honor Colonel Tom Kelly, a true legend in the world of wild turkey hunting, forestry and conservation. Best known as the author of Tenth Legion, Colonel Kelly's writings captured not only the pursuit of wild turkeys but also the deeper connection between hunters, the land, and the traditions that bind us together.
For many years, Colonel Kelly shared his wisdom, humor, and unmatched passion for turkey hunting through his involvement with the Wild Turkey Hunting School at Westervelt Lodge. Those fortunate enough to attend the school heard firsthand the stories, lessons, and philosophy that made him one of the most respected voices in the outdoor world. He inspired generations of hunters to value the experience as much as the harvest, teaching that the greatest rewards often come from the pursuit itself.
Colonel Kelly's influence reached far beyond the pages of his books. Through his time at Westervelt Lodge and countless conversations in the woods and around campfires, he helped shape the understanding of what it truly means to be a turkey hunter. His words, wit, and reverence for wild places left a lasting impression on everyone who crossed his path.
While his passing marks the end of an extraordinary life, his legacy will continue to echo through spring mornings, distant gobbles, and the many hunters whose appreciation for the wild turkey was deepened by his work. We are grateful for the time he shared with the Westervelt lodge family and the Wild Turkey Hunting School, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
