Heat Alert as of May 16, 8:30 a.m.:
Buncombe County is under a Heat Health Alert on Friday, May 16, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. The maximum heat index in the county is expected to reach 86 degrees. The heat index is what the temperature feels like to the human body when relative humidity is combined with the air temperature.

Temperatures this high can be dangerous for everyone and are especially dangerous for those exposed to heat more often or more vulnerable to heat. This includes:
- Older Adults
- People with Disabilities
- Outside Workers
- Children
- Those without air conditioning
- Pregnant Women
- Pets

Check on your neighbors and family and prepare now by staying cool in an area with A/C, drinking plenty of fluids, wearing light clothing, and never leave kids or pets in a car.

Buncombe County parks, libraries, and administrative offices will close at 1 p.m. today, Jan. 10. The landfill and transfer station will remain open as roads safely allow. Community Care Stations will remain open Friday.

The Buncombe County Courthouse also will close at 1 p.m. Friday.

FCC Environmental trucks are completing routes in the Fairview area. Once completed, crews will move to regularly scheduled Friday routes in North Buncombe weather permitting.

Buncombe County operations are scheduled to open at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11.
All FEMA Helene Disaster Recovery Centers are closed Jan. 10-11 due to inclement weather.

NEW LOCATION FOR FEMA IN-PERSON HELP: Starting tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 9, the FEMA Disaster Recovery Center has a new location at the Asheville Mall at 3 S. Tunnel Road in the former Gap store open everyday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
This location is accessible for those who use public transit through ART bus route WE1.

The Disaster Recovery Center is a one-stop shop to get in-person assistance from FEMA and the Small Business Administration.

Mobile DRCs (M-DRC) continue to operate in Buncombe County at:
-Nov. 11-14: Swannanoa Fire Rescue - Bee Tree Fire Sub Station: 510 Bee Tree Rd., Swannanoa. Open: 8 a.m.-7 p.m.

Get ahead of Election Day by voting early. Polls are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Nov. 1, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Nov. 2. Don't forget: you’ll need a photo ID to vote! This can be an NC driver’s license, voter ID, or another accepted form of identification.

If you were impacted by Hurricane Helene, you may qualify for one-time food assistance through D-SNAP providing money directly to you to help buy food.

Pre-register: epass.nc.gov

Apply in-person: Buncombe County Health and Human Services, 40 Coxe Ave, Asheville, NC, 28801, from Oct. 18-24, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you are unable to go in-person to apply, you can fill out an authorization form and send an authorized representative in their place. Eligibility: You must live in one of the eligible counties and have suffered losses from Hurricane Helene. And you must not be currently receiving benefits through the Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) program. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Nov. 2.

On Wednesday, Oct. 23, Buncombe County will reopen to the public with regular business hours, except for most parks and two libraries. The Buncombe County landfill, located at 85 Panther Road in Alexander, is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Transfer Station at 190 Hominy Creek Road in Asheville is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for residential bagged trash and household recycling. Regular fees apply.

Bagged trash can be dropped off tomorrow at Owen Pool.

Recycling can be dropped off at Curbside Management, 116 N. Woodfin Ave. in Asheville, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. A drop-off area is available just inside the gate.

Examples include being asked by a government agency or a local organization to assist with specific duties. Community Care Stations provide space for the public to shower, do laundry, use the bathroom, access cell towers and WiFi, get potable and non-potable water, and access counseling services. They are open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Hot meals are offered at each Community Care Station at lunchtime and dinnertime. Please bring towels, shower shoes, and toiletries if possible; otherwise, items will be provided.
