When one of you starts causing trouble on The Ragbrai Spacebook page and I agree so much with the point you are making… that I get called out for being the hater… lol I gave the old GPT my question and this is my answer… Proud of all the Cycling Community on being above average even when people say the event is unsafe…
RAGBRAI is actually a great real-world example because its population is right in the range you mentioned.
In recent years, RAGBRAI has typically had 18,000–20,000 registered riders, with some years much higher. The 50th anniversary in 2023 saw up to 50,000 people on the road during the busiest day (including day riders and support crews).
If we compare to a typical RAGBRAI (≈20,000 people)
Using the average modern death rate:
* Population: ~20,000
* Duration: 7 days
* Expected natural deaths: ≈3 people
That means if RAGBRAI were a normal city of 20,000 people that stayed together for a week, statistics would predict about 3 deaths from natural causes during that week.
But RAGBRAI isn’t a normal population
There are a few important differences:
Lower risk factors
* Participants are healthy enough to ride 400+ miles.
* Most are medically screened by self-selection.
* They’re physically active.
Higher risk factors
* Heat stress
* Traffic accidents
* Bicycle crashes
* Cardiac events triggered by strenuous exercise
* Dehydration
These shift the causes of death, but not necessarily the total number.
Reality
Considering that hundreds of thousands of people have participated in RAGBRAI over more than 50 years, fatalities have been quite rare relative to the enormous exposure. Most years have zero deaths, while a small number of years have had one or more due to crashes or medical emergencies.
An interesting way to think about it
Imagine a city of 20,000 people:
* In one week, about 3 people would normally die from all causes.
* During RAGBRAI, despite everyone being concentrated together, you often see 0 deaths because the participants are generally healthier than the average population.
That’s an example of the healthy participant effect: a physically active event attracts people who are, on average, healthier than the general public, so their expected natural mortality over a week is lower than what you’d predict from the population as a whole.
