What are you training for?
At 2:00 in the morning, I was riding my mountain bike down a washed-out forest road in the Valles Caldera.
It was raining.
I had two elk quarters strapped to my bike trailer and nearly another 100 pounds on my back.
My headlamp and bike light were illuminating only the small piece of road in front of me.
And I felt completely alive.
That moment was years in the making.
Years of strength training. Mountain biking. Rucking with my dogs. Learning to control my breath. More than a decade of buck fever, impatience, missed opportunities, and learning from hunters with far more experience than me.
None of those misses were wasted.
They were tuition.
That's one of the lessons behind my newest Thrive essay: Thrive Through Adventure.
We spend a lot of time talking about strength, mobility, conditioning, nutrition, sleep, recovery, and longevity.
But those things aren't the destination.
They're tools.
The bigger question is:
What are you building your health for?
For me, it's the ability to ride, hike, hunt, fish, explore God's creation, teach others, and share those experiences with people I love.
Your adventure doesn't have to look anything like mine.
Maybe it's hiking with your spouse.
Traveling.
Skiing with your kids.
Playing with your grandchildren.
Or simply being capable enough to say yes when an opportunity comes along.
That's why we train.
Movement creates options. Strength keeps those options open.
Read my newest essay, Thrive Through Adventure, and then ask yourself:
What adventure are you preparing for?
Train in the gym. Learn in the wild.
Live Life Beyond the Gym Walls.
Adventure is where preparation meets opportunity. Discover how strength, resilience, faith, and time in nature help us stay capable and truly thrive.
