[Mark Fraser] At 5:47am (Tue 13Jan26) I heard screaming and someone yelling for help. I looked out my window and saw someone trying to hold someone down in the parking lot of my apartment complex (near Eubank/Layton). I called 911 immediately and described what I saw. As the police were on their way I got dressed and went downstairs out to the parking lot. I did not see any guns, so I approached them and said I called the police. The guy on top said thanks. I asked if he needed any help and he said he was ok. The guy being held had blood on his head and was rambling about the Romans and Jupiter.
I asked what happened and the hero of the story said his mom went out to go to work, and as she started to drive, this crazy guy ran over and opened her door and pulled her out of the car and tried to cover her head with a towel. The car went on and crashed in the dumpster. The son heard her screaming and ran out and tackled the guy and pinned him. There was a very large bloody gash on the crazy guy's head from when he hit the pavement.
I asked the son if he had any martial arts training and he said no but he had wrestled in high school. As the crazy guy ramble on, I told the son it looked like he had good control of the guy (his legs entangled the guy's right arm, as he laid across the guy's body controlling his left arm). Two other people were holding his legs.
More people started to come out. I called the number the police had texted me, and they said they got multiple calls about this and they were on their way, It took about 35 minutes before the police finally got there, then two ambulances, another police car, and a fire truck. They handcuffed the crazy guy and took him away in an ambulance.
The police did not want a statement from me since I did not witness the original incident. They suggested that the mom and son come to the hospital to be checked out (also since they were exposed the the crazy guy's blood). The mom was crying as the son hugged her. I told him he saved his mom's life, and that all his wrestling training paid off. They both laughed. (It turns out the mom was one of the people holding the guy's legs!)
I relayed the incident to everyone at Judo class tonight, and asked them to tell their female friends and relatives to always have situational awareness and watch out wherever they go.
