Holiday Situational Awareness Tips
As we kick off our Holiday Safety Series, we’re starting with one of the most powerful self-defense tools you already have: situational awareness.
During the busy holiday months, parking lots, shopping centers, and public spaces become more crowded — which means staying alert is more important than ever. Here are simple habits that can dramatically increase your safety:
🔹 1. Walk With Purpose
Move with direction and confidence. Offenders often target people who appear distracted or unsure. Even if you’re unfamiliar with an area, act as if you know exactly where you’re going.
🔹 2. Limit Distractions
Your phone is one of the biggest threats to your awareness.
✔️ Keep your eyes up when walking to your car
✔️ Save texting or scrolling for when you’re in a secure location
Giving your attention to the environment increases your reaction time if something feels off.
🔹 3. Make Quick Safety Scans
Before getting in your vehicle:
✔️ Look around the parking area
✔️ Check your backseat
✔️ Identify anyone loitering or behaving unusually
These 2–3 second scans are simple but extremely effective.
🔹 4. Trust Your Instincts
If a situation doesn’t feel right, it usually isn’t.
Move to a safer location, enter a nearby business, or call for help. Never ignore that internal alarm.
🔹 5. Create Distance When Possible
If someone approaches you and you don’t feel comfortable:
✔️ Maintain at least an arm’s-length buffer
✔️ Change direction
✔️ Use your voice confidently: “I’m good, thank you.”
Distance gives you options — and options keep you safe.
Stay Safe. Stay Aware. Stay Confident.
We’ll continue releasing more holiday safety tips over the next few weeks, along with optional hands-on training for anyone who wants to learn practical defensive skills.
