Current Fishing Report
It’s been a good spring so far on Lake Fork! The lake is in great shape right now. The water level is close to full pool, and the temperature is close to 60 degrees first thing in the mornings.
Spring came early for us this year with an unseasonably warm February. I believe most of the bass are finished spawning, but there are still a few more coming in what I believe will be the last “wave”.
You’ll hear fishermen referring to “waves” of fish coming in large groups to spawn. In reality, for the last few years there has been one big wave. There are always a few “early birds” and at the end there will be some “stragglers”. However, with the hard cold snaps and strong warming trends we’ve had the last couple of years, it seems like most of the fish move up to spawn at the same time.
This is a great scenario the first few days it is taking place. Everybody seems to be catching fish and having great days, but eventually at some point, most of the fish have been caught. Then you are left with a bunch of finicky fish that have been caught numerous times in the recent weeks.
That’s where we are now: dealing with a bunch of finicky post spawn bass. There’s a silver lining though. In mid April there should be a bunch of hungry post spawners out and about!
After the spawn, bass need two or three weeks to lick their wounds, so to speak. There will be a period of tough fishing while they recover from the stress of spawning. However, when that period of time is over, the best fishing of the year usually follows. This April should be a great month!
