Kerri Baker Pilates Certified Pilates instructor, NASM-certified personal trainer & 200hr yoga teacher in Alameda.

For the past decade, I’ve been teaching private, one-on-one pilates sessions to clients out of my home studio in a converted loft in the heart of Downtown LA. I have equipment including a reformer, ladder barrel, wunda chair, pilates springboard, and floor equipment. My clients are as diverse as Los Angeles, ranging in age from 18 to 80, and including folks of all different backgrounds, body types

, and goals. To me, pilates is about more than physical exercise: it’s about taking an active role in your health and aging process, and working toward a physical and mental balance. I’m extremely proud of helping people on this journey, and seeing my client’s grow is what keeps me inspired daily.

Last month, my friend Mila passed away. I’ve spend the past weeks trying to put words on the screen to honor her and I’ve struggled. How do you put the sum of a life into words? As I sit at the airport, flying to LA to say a final goodbye, it finally hit me.

Mila was an artist, a music lover, a cat parent, and devoted to her family and friends. She was so young, so vibrant. Most of all, even when faced with the unimaginable, she lived life to the fullest.

Mila was a complex person, and our friendship had more than its share of ups and downs. Every friendship does. I am so grateful that we always found our way through. Looking through the history of our friendship in photographs, I realized she was the one to insist on documenting every gathering. I am so glad because our photos are filled with smiles, laughter and love.

Goodbye, my friend. I know you are on the other side, surrounded by love, dancing to the music in your heart.

The Ab(solutely) Series closes out with everyone's favorite, move 10: Child's Pose.

Sink back over your heels into Child's Pose. Tight hips? Widen your knees. Tight shoulders? Stretch your arms out long. This can be as easy or active as you want it to be.

We're almost through my essential ab workout! Move 9 of The Ab(solutely) Series: The Swan 🦢

Lay face down on the mat, with arms out like goal posts. Keep your palms to the floor, with elbows lifting slightly.

Lift your head, keeping your eyes forward. Slowly press your upper body off the floor. Only lift as far as your body wants you to. Trust me, it will tell you.

Float back down.

Repeat 3-5x.

What you might not know: This is technically Swan Prep. Swan involves lifting your arms up and rocking on your abs. Not for the faint of heart!

Criss Cross ❌ move 8 of The Ab(solutely) Series.

Rest your head in your hands, and curl your head and shoulders off the mat.

As you twist to the right, bring your left elbow and right knee together slowly.

Switch sides. Repeat for 5 sets.

🔥 Hot tip: The slower your go, the more work it is. I try to get my elbow to the ground.

Holy wow, you're doing great! We're all the way at Part 6 of the The Ab(solutely) Series, essentials for abs.

The One Straight Leg Stretch: Curl your head and shoulders off the mat, and grab your right leg as high as you can reach it. Keep your shoulders out of your ears!

Lower your left leg as low as you can without touching the floor.

Keeping your legs straight, pulse the right leg in 2x. Switch legs.

Repeat for 5 sets.

❗️Extra Credit: Do another 5 sets, without the pulse.

‼️ Extra Extra Credit: Do that extra set of 5 with your hands reaching for the ceiling.
