Behind the neck press - a controversial exercise. Hereâs my takeđđŒ
Youâll often see or hear advice on this lift that states âdonât do it, itâs a bad exerciseâ. This is bad advice. And Iâll tell you why:
(Nearly) every exercise has a specific purpose, and can be performed safely IF you have the strength/mobility required to do so.
For this particular lift, there is a lot of shoulder mobility, and back + core strength needed to perform correctly. If you donât have these, there are lots of other regressions or alternatives to choose from.
This exercise wouldnât make sense for everyone to program, but if youâre working on performing Olympic lifts, itâs a must-do exercise.
There is nuance to everything, so a blanket statement of âthatâs a bad exercise, donât do itâ is often bad advice.
Do some research and see if an exercise is right for you. Or better yet, hire a coach - they are the professionals!
