Great day at Bruce’s Field with my personal horses and some clients!
Mr.Cash, Otto and Jenny Vogler’s Q had great, clear rounds in the 1.20, 1.10 and .85 respectively,
And my student with her own Cheese also clear in the 1.10!

Self carriage. Suppleness. Balance. Power from the hind end. These are all things we talk about a lot when riding and training horses. You might see them as comments in your dressage tests or hear them in discussion; but how do we create them?

Here I talk through some of my warmup on a client’s new horse, Olaf. This horse is new to my farm and it was my first ride on him. So, I’m working on getting to know him and letting him get comfortable with me, while also asking him to trust me and move outward into contact while maintaining self carriage.

I have a whole series planned around this ride from start to finish, so if you’d like to see how I start a ride on a horse that is brand new to me, or, want to learn how I approach these equestrian ‘buzzwords’ watch for more of these clips. Olaf has a fantastic foundation and some really good training to work with, so he demonstrates them very well!

Does anyone know why I specifically pat and praise with my INSIDE hand here?

Huge thanks to Andrea King for connecting my client with this horse - he is really spectacular to work with and I’m so excited to have him in my program! We can’t thank you enough for the perfect match for my client and friend Keyanna Farken

Pokerface is back home and resting after a scary couple days battling an unexplained illness. He will need some time to recover and regain his strength, but I’m so glad this special guy pulled through and will be back out there soon!
Thank you to everyone who checked on me and Poker, sent good healing vibes, and kept him in your thoughts.

In the mean time I am reminiscing on our recent jump school, and looking forward to Bruce’s Field this weekend with Mr. Cash, Otto and some clients!

Run through a recent Beginner Novice test with me!
My client’s mare & training horse Q put in a really lovely text at Stable View that gave some amazing moments and some homework for us too with areas to improve.

This video shows the comments paired with the actual movements so you can see too.

How do you think Q did, and do you agree with these scores?

Q is owned by Jenny Vogler and has been such a pleasure to help produce!

Planning your stride, knowing how to prepare for what’s next, and getting it done EARLY! This exercise is all about adjustability - asking your horse to extend and compress and go back and forth between the two. These skills are foundational as you move up the levels.

This exercise in particular asks your horse to open their stride in a competition 3 then come back quickly for some tricky footwork, then in reverse they compress and extend to make the distance.

The great thing about eventing is you can train 2 phases at once, we are utilizing show jumping fences here but this concept comes up in cross country a LOT! Think big tables to tight combinations that require precision, or galloping fences into a coffin. It all connects!

did a fantastic job demonstrating exactly how to ride this here!

There are several more great moments in this lesson so be sure to be on the lookout for more content with this pair.

Sneak peak of the newest drop from Esprit Equestrian Wear - did you catch the little sparkles?

“I’ve got to do better” probably isn’t something you’re used to hearing professionals say, but it is a reality for us too, especially when training younger horses or working through more difficult exercises.
This grid and set up is challenging for both horse and rider. Quick foot work, adjustability, suppleness and ride ability are all tested.

Here I am mic’d up and narrating exactly what goes through my head as I am riding (and training) while navigating it. Poker is extremely talented but still young and learning body control, strength and confidence through more challenging work.

A longer video with the full exercise is available on my page, Sarah Kuhn Equestrian for anyone who is interested!

Have questions? Let me know in the comments!

Huge thanks to Harmony Animal Chiropractic for keeping Poker’s body in top shape so I can confidently ask this of him! And LEGIS Equine Insurance for making sure he is always covered!

HUGE milestone this week as Mr. Cash and I hit the cross country course for the first time since my injury!

Feels so good to be back out there with my best guy, and he was foot perfect. Confident, game and just as ready as I was 💪🏼
