What if camping didn’t require hours of packing before you could even leave?

That’s why Willem built his own DIY Vaga. He wanted something he could jump into on a Friday afternoon and go, without spending two hours packing and another hour setting up camp.

With minimal build experience and only a garage to work out of, he used our DIY plans to make the project feel achievable. Five months later, his camper was on the road.

And you can too! It costs less than you think…

Here’s the part nobody tells you. When you build it yourself, you control the budget. You decide what you actually need and what you can skip.

Some folks just want a simple hard shell that gets them off the ground and comfortable at the state park. Others want an off road beast they can take into the desert for weeks. Two completely different builds, two completely different budgets, and both are totally doable.

Our most popular model, the Vaga, has been built by Diyers for anywhere from $2,500 to $13,000. Most land right around $6,500. The best part is you get to decide where on that line you land.

Want to run your own numbers? We built a full cost breakdown spreadsheet with every part and material you’ll need, so you can see what YOUR camper would actually cost before you spend a dollar.

Here’s why…

• 1,300 lbs – tow it with our Crosstrek 🚗
• Off-road suspension takes us anywhere 🏜️
• Queen bed with a REAL mattress 😴
• Outdoor galley makes cooking easy 🍳
• DIYing saved us a ton of 💰

We used to look at an open weekend and think, “That’s not enough time to go camping.”

By the time we packed the car, set up camp, and got settled, it would practically be time to come home.
Then we built a teardrop.

Now we leave Friday, open the hatch when we arrive, and spend the weekend outside. Two days suddenly feels like plenty of time.

Builder feature of the week 🛠️

Could he have designed his own camper? Probably. But why reinvent the wheel?

With years of experience building cars from scratch, he already had the skills to take on a project like this. He still chose our DIY Vaga plans because they took the engineering and guesswork off his plate so he could focus on actually building.

About four months later, he had a finished teardrop for a fraction of what many campers cost to buy.

His advice? “Buy the plans.”
