Meta just agreed to pay up to $17 billion over what its apps were doing to kids, and the changes for anyone under 18 are real: a two-hour daily cap, a midnight-to-6 a.m. blackout, hidden like counts.
But the settlement changes the app. It doesn't change what a kid actually needs instead of it. A January 2026 study of more than 50,000 kids found physical activity, not screen content, not even sleep, was the single biggest factor explaining why heavy screen time hurts kids' mental health, accounting for up to 38.9% of the link.
