Lieutenant J. Wesley (Wes) Van Dorn was a 29-year-old U.S. Navy pilot who died on January 8, 2014, when his MH-53E Sea Dragon helicopter crashed into the Atlantic Ocean 18 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach during a routine training exercise. Two other crew members, Lt. Shawn Snyder and Petty Officer Brian Collins, also died in the crash.

He attended the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill for one year. Wes then chose to attend the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 2007 with a degree in Ocean Engineering. While at the USNA, Wes served on the Superintendents Honor Council, studied for a semester at West Point, rowed two years on the Varsity Heavy-weight Crew Team and played on two Final Four Rugby Teams. Wes served proudly as a member of Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 14, based out of Naval Air Station Norfolk, where he was preparing for his new responsibilities as flight instructor. His service included three deployments, two to South Korea and one to Bahrain.

U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Justin Sisson, 23, assigned to 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, died June 3, 2013, from wounds caused by a su***de bomber in Chamkani, Afghanistan.

After graduating from Blue Valley West High School in Overland Park, May 2007, Justin received an ROTC Scholarship to Florida State University, his Dad’s alma mater. During his Freshman year at FSU, he joined the Florida National Guard, and completed Basic Training at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. During his Sophmore year at FSU, Justin chose to deploy with his National Guard Unit for a year in Mosul, Iraq. While there he performed various roles, gunner, driver, mechanic, electronic warfare specialist and intelligence specialist. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his exceptional service

He returned to FSU in 2010 after serving, graduated and received his commission as a 2nd Lt in the U.S. Army in April 2012. He earned the George C. Marshall Award as the top cadet in his Army ROTC unit. He was in the top 5 percent of cadets nationwide. He was Company Commander for his ROTC unit, his Senior year. Justin completed IBOLC, Air Assault, Airborne, Sapper and Ranger Schools before being assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, 506th IN, 4th BCT, Ft. Campbell, KY, in January 2013. He deployed to Afghanistan with the ADVON group in April 2013.

Sisson is survived by his parents, Kevin and Phyllis; brother, Ryan; grandmothers, Judith Liming and Janis Beshoner; and numerous other friends and family members.

Glen A. Doherty, a CIA contract protective officer, lost his life in the service of his country while trying to protect a CIA facility in Benghazi, Libya, early on the morning of September 12, 2012. He was killed alongside his friend and fellow officer

Glen was a highly decorated SEAL, a warrior and a medical corpsman: He was a nine-year veteran with combat experience in Iraq and Afghanistan. He came to the Navy and later to CIA to fulfill his sense of adventure and his need for service.

Glen Doherty was 42 years old. He is survived by his parents, his brother and sister, and the many friends who packed the church for his funeral as well as the streets of Wi******er, Massachusetts.

In the wake of Glen’s death, his family and friends launched The Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation, affectionately known as GDMF. The Foundation gives scholarships to members of the special operations community as a means of transitioning out of military and back to civilian life. To date they have given over 28 scholarships to amazing candidates. They do this knowing that it is a lasting legacy to an amazing man and friend lost too soon. Sgt. Aaron N. Holleyman, 26, was a Special Forces medical sergeant assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Campbell, Ky.

He was killed in action during Operation Iraqi Freedom on Aug. 30, 2004, near Khutayiah, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device exploded near his vehicle.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, the Combat Medical Badge, the Expert Infantryman Badge, the Driver and Mechanic Badge, the Parachutist Badge and the Special Forces Tab.

Holleyman is survived by two daughters and a son in Fayetteville, N.C.; his brother, Pfc. Daniel M. Holleyman of the Mississippi Army National Guard’s 2nd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne); and his parents, Ross and Glenda Holleyman, of Carthage, Miss.

On July 7, 2016, a sniper coordinated an ambush on a group of police officers in Dallas, Texas. Dallas 5 commemorates the five officers who lost their lives in the attack.

Dallas Police Officer Patricio “Patrick” Zamarripa, 33, was a member of the force for six years and served active duty with the U.S. Navy for eight years and in the reserves for five. He is survived by his wife, Kristy, and daughter, Lyncoln Rae.

Dallas Police Senior Corporal Lorne Ahrens, 48, was a longtime member of the force. He served with the Los Angeles Police Department for 10 years before moving to Texas and joining the Dallas Police Department in 2002. He is survived by his wife, Katrina, and children, Sorcha and Magnus.

Dallas Police Officer Michael Krol, 40, was an eight-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department and a dedicated member of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office in Detroit, Michigan, before that. He is survived by numerous friends and family members.

Dallas Police Sergeant Michael Smith, 55, served as a U.S. Army Ranger before joining the police force in 1989. The 27-year veteran of the force is survived by his wife, Heidi, and daughters, Victoria and Caroline.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit Officer Brent Thompson, 43, served in the Marine Corps before joining the Corsicana Police Department and then the Dallas Police. He is survived by his wife, Emily, and many other friends and family members.

The Yarnell Hill Fire was a wildfire near Yarnell, Arizona, ignited by dry lightning on June 28, 2013. On June 30, it overran and killed 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, a group of firefighters within the Prescott Fire Department. Just one of the hotshots on the crew survived (Brendan McDonough) — he was posted as a lookout on the fire and was not with the others when the fire overtook them. The Yarnell Hill Fire was one of the deadliest U.S. wildfires

The tragedy is primarily attributed to an extreme and sudden shift in weather patterns, causing the fire to intensify and cut off the firefighters’ route as they were escaping. The victims were killed by the intense heat and flames of the fire. Other factors that contributed to the tragedy include the terrain surrounding the escape route, which may have blocked the victims’ view of the fire front and limited situational awareness, and problems with radio communications.

Their legacy is honored at the Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial State Park, which features a hiking trail leading down to the overlook and the specific fatality site.
