Today, we honor Juneteenth and celebrate freedom, resilience, and the enduring contributions of Black Americans to our communities.

At the YMCA of Abilene, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive. As we reflect on our history, we recommit ourselves to fostering a welcoming and inclusive community where all people belong.

Together, we can build a stronger future for everyone.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” - Martin Luther King

We've wrapped up National Water Safety Month, but we want to leave you with one last important tip to remember: SWIMSUIT. COLOR. MATTERS.

This image indicates what different swimsuits look like under water, both with calm water and with agitated water. Before you start shopping for your next summer suit, consider buying colors that would stand out to Lifeguards and Water Waters even in a deep pool!

Water Safety Month Post #5

Topic: Shallow Water Blackouts

Breath-holding in a pool is extremely dangerous, often leading to shallow-water blackout—a loss of consciousness under water that can cause sudden death, even in experienced swimmers. It is a top cause of preventable, fatal drowning where a swimmer passes out from low oxygen without warning.

Safety Guidelines & Prevention
- Never participate in breath-holding games or competitions.
- Never swim alone; always use the buddy system.
- Avoid hyperventilating (taking rapid, deep breaths) before entering the water.
- Do not push yourself to hold your breath for long periods or swim long distances underwater.
- If you feel the need to breathe, surface immediately.
