Had the opportunity to fish with Clay Lohse owner of RESPECT THE FISH GUIDE SERVICE last weekend. Let me tell ya, I’ve fished all over the world and made a living fishing, Clay runs a top notch operation. He not only puts ya on the fish but teaches why he does what he does. As we preach at RSO, our goal is to not only take the quarry we’re after but also show you how we do it and teach the science behind it. Clay embodies this to the Max! We ended the day with more white bass then we knew what to do with and a new tactic to catch them.

The shock gobble! - this trick, in my mind, is one of the biggest keys to a successful hunt. The shock gobble is a way to use loud, sudden, noise to trick a roosted Tom to give away his position. My personal favorite tool is an air horn! A quick pop in a clearing around a roost area can give you a quick vector toward where the bird will be spending the night. I’ve found the best time to use this tactic is the last 1/2 hr of daylight or an hour b4 sun up.
Once the bird is located, set up 100-200 yards away the next morning BEFORE SUN UP!!! I usually try to be set and quiet 30 mins prior to shooting time. Durring this time listen to the purrs and cackles of other hens. Your gobbler sould start to sound off when he hears your close! But remeber he wants you to come to him. So don’t over call. Sometimes less is more. Listen for him to fly down and get ready! You might not hear anything again till it’s time to to put the waffle stomp on him!
