🥎 PSA for Catchers & Catcher Parents ⚾️
I recently saw a post about a catcher’s mitt with a blown-out thumb seam, and it reminded me that this is something I see on my repair bench more often than people realize.
The first thing I want to say is this:
This is NOT necessarily a brand issue.
I’ve repaired this exact failure on Wilsons, Rawlings, Nokonas, Pro Preferreds, Heart of the Hide mitts, and many others. In my experience, it’s become a more common wear pattern with today’s receiving style, where catchers work from the bottom up and the thumb side of the mitt sees repeated contact with the dirt.
The good news?
A blown thumb seam usually doesn’t mean the mitt is done for. In many cases, it’s a very repairable issue when caught and addressed properly.
If you have your catcher’s mitt relaced, ask your relacer to inspect the thumb seam while the mitt is apart. Catching a problem early can prevent a much bigger repair later.
At KTMK, every glove that comes through my shop gets a glove health review because I believe in fixing problems before they become failures.
Keep playing. Keep competing. And don’t give up on a good mitt too soon.
Player First. Community Always.
