The Problem
Many Japanese-import Toyota (and some similar) car radios/navigation systems show this error after the battery is disconnected or replaced:"Press the switch until it beeps to open the display and insert the map SD card."
This is very common on radio models with factory navigation (e.g., NSZT, NHZA, Eclipse AVN, etc.). The system loses its memory/settings when power is cut, and it requires a specific map SD card to boot the navigation/radio software.
Without it, the radio often becomes unusable (no sound, no menus, etc.).
Here are Quick DIY Steps
(if you already have or get the correct SD card)Turn the ignition to Accessory mode (or start the engine).
Press and hold the AUDIO switch (or the relevant button) for at least 5 seconds until it beeps — the display should open or tilt.
Insert the map SD card into the correct slot (usually the navigation/map slot, not the music one). It should click in properly.
Close the display if needed, then restart the system (turn ignition off/on).
If the card is compatible, the radio should recognize it and resume normal operation.
Note: Using a wrong or copied SD card can cause recurring issues after future battery changes.
Original or properly prepared cards are recommended by many service providers.
