Ghana Rugby - From Eaglets to Eagles national team (the Eagles/Black Eagles) crushed Benin (the Squirrels) 46-5 in the Rugby Africa Regional Challenge (Group West 1).
The match kicked off the regional tournament at Accra Sports Stadium in Ghana (hosted entirely in Accra for logistical reasons). It was a round-robin format among three West African sides - 🇬🇭 Ghana, 🇧🇯 Benin, and 🇹🇬 Togo.
Ghana dominated from the start, building a 29-5 halftime lead and pulling away in the second half. Attendance was modest at around 250 fans.
• 🇬🇭 Ghana tries: Jalilu Yussif Abdul (2), Abdul Mumuni Halidu, Theophilus Opai (3), Michael Acquaye, Kelechi Onwunta. Conversions by Opai (2) and Francis Donkor.
• 🇧🇯 Benin try: Alphonse Guegni (their only points).
Fullback Yusif Jalilu was a standout early, scoring multiple tries and helping Ghana race into a commanding lead.
Ghana went on to win the entire group undefeated (they later beat Togo 10-0), finishing top of the standings and advancing in the broader Rugby Africa structure. Benin took second (with a narrow win over Togo), while Togo finished last. The tournament was part of Rugby Africa’s 2017 push to grow the sport across the continent’s emerging regions, not the top-tier competitions.
Ghana’s rugby federation president at the time, Herbert Mensah, praised the team’s progress, calling the result a proud moment for the Eagles and evidence that Ghanaian rugby was moving forward. Benin’s coach was gracious in defeat, simply noting they faced a stronger side.
