PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Include information for all 7 bullet points. Be as detailed as possible. The project is focused on
The details of your project. (What activities are you proposing to do?). In order to achieve the intended goal through adaptive sport, we would like to carry out the following key activities:

• Organize disability rights awareness conferences

This activity will be organized both in Kampala - Uganda and Kigali – Rwanda. It will be a one day non – residential conference in each country. In Kampala, 45 participants are targeted and in Kigali, 30 participants are targeted. The purpose of this activity is to make persons aware of their rights and empower them with skills to advocate for their rights.

• Organize adapted sports clinics

This activity will also be organized both in Kampala - Uganda and Kigali – Rwanda. In this activity, the
project will select six adapted sports, identify persons with disabilities and some able-bodied people in
the community, introduce these sports and make them practice these sports. The purpose of this activity is to create awareness on some of the various adapted sports, their benefits, promote social inclusion and reduce self-stigma and lack of assertiveness among persons with disabilities.

• Hold media summits

In this project we shall organize two media summits, one in Uganda and another in Rwanda. We intend to bring on board the media so as to pave way for their involvement and vigilance in the struggle for stopping violation of the rights of persons with disabilities in society.

• Create project social media platforms

For purposes of further dissemination of the cause of this project, we shall create media platforms. These will include: Project Whats app group, page and Instagram.

• 2 TV and 2 Radio talk shows

For purposes of further dissemination of the cause of this project, reaching out to grassroot community, we shall organize 2 TV and 2 Radio talk shows. This will be done both in Uganda and Rwanda.

• Write and publish at least 2 articles on Sports and rights of PWDs

Our project will develop and publish in the print media two articles in each of the two countries where it is going to work. This will further help to reach out to a wider range of members of the community, policy makers and implementors – informing them the need to implement both international and national laws relating to disability rights.

• Hold adapted sport advocacy meetings with key government policy makers and implementers

The project will meet and dialogue with key government policy makers and implementors on how best, the two governments in Uganda and Rwanda can help in the promotion of adapted sports as a means of involving persons with disabilities in sports for development and social inclusion. Activity plan:

• The need that the program or project will help meet. (What is the specific challenge facing women and girl and/or people with disabilities in your region?)

The need:

Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) include those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which in interaction with various barriers may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others. Accessibility, education, discrimination from sports, health care, unemployment and poverty are some of the issues that need to be addressed in order to ease the life of PWDs in Uganda and Rwanda. There is therefore a great need for empowering the PWDs with knowledge and assertiveness to advocate for their rights and at the same time, creation of awareness among communities, policy makers and program implementers about the rights of PWDs in order to mitigate violation of their rights and paving way for inclusion of PWDs in all programs. The challenge:

Accessibility to physical environment and information, education, Sports, health care, unemployment and poverty are the very pertinent issues affecting Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Uganda and Rwanda. These are very significant because almost 80% of PWDs are affected. Government and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) set up good programs in the communities but all these end up excluding the PWDs. For example in schools and health facilities, the management and staff have limited knowledge on how to handle children and adults with disabilities and the same is true with other government departments especially those in the social service sector, CSOs and employers. All the above challenges amount to violation of the rights of PWDs if they are not addressed. The proposed project wants to use adaptive sports as a tool to empower the PWDs in Uganda and Rwanda to advocate for their rights, develop and promote social inclusion in their communities. In the process, the project will increase self-awareness on the rights of Person with disabilities in social life, sports participation especially women and girls with disabilities with a goal of improving their physical literacy in order to be confident and physically active for life.

• The innovative purpose of the program or project. (How are you using sport to address this specific problem?)

In East Africa, adapted sport is a new concept that amazes almost everybody. It is also believed that among the benefits of sports are unity, socialization, conflict resolution, employment and connection of various groups of people. We believe that, in this struggle against violation of disability rights there is need for socialization and connection of various key players in the communities. Therefore, if the component of this type of sport is applied, it will attract the attention and touch the policy makers and implementers if they are connected by adapted sport to the PWDs whose rights are violated. Hence ending this problem. Our project will organize adapted sports clinics in various disciplines. These will attract the attention of the target audience, the public and drive them to understanding of the cause as to why really there is need for inclusion and advocacy for the rights of persons with disabilities.

• The anticipated benefits or outcomes. (How will participants in your program be different after participating? How will your community be different?)

By the end of this project we expect

- Social inclusion

- Increased self-esteem

- Awareness on human rights

- Reduced public and self-stigmatization towards person with disabilities.

- Reduced inequality on the adapted sports participation on the women with disabilities.

- Disability Policy changes / review
